any information on Thomas Thompson NEW INFO ADDED
« on: Friday 13 January 12 06:06 GMT (UK) »
From the 1841 census I have the following -
Gateshead,  ED 19,  Piece 296, Book 17,  Folio 12, Page 18, Line 23
Hundred - Chester (East Division)
Thomas Thompson abt 40,  Labourer, born Durham
Mary Thompson abt 20, born Durham
Jane Thompson abt 15, born Durham
Robert Thompson abt 15, born Durham
Elizabeth Thompson abt 14, born Durham
William Thompson abt 12, born Durham
Christopher Thompson abt 7, borh Durham
Mary Thompson abt 4, born Durham
Joseph Thompson abt 2, born Durham

My particular interest is Elizabeth Thompson, her marriage registration to Robert Georgson in 1845 in Heworth shows her father as Thomas Thompson.  In the 1851 census there is a William Thompson abt 24, brother, Cartman living with the family, so far the above family is the closest I have come across for the 1841 census.

The 1841 census doesn't show any relationships or parish born,  it appears that there is no wife (or mother of Elizabeth) listed.  I would appreciate any help to find the marriage of Thomas and therefore the mother of Elizabeth.   Something else that is clouding the waters is that there is another Mary aged 4 in this family as well.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Looking at Elizabeth in the 1851 census her birth is 1826 in Gateshead.

But the only marriage of a Thomas Thompson in Gateahead at the time of about 1820ish is this one

1817 Thompas Thompson to a Anne Robson

but I would certainly look further before saying it is the right one as there are at least three other Thomas's born about 1800 in Gateshead.

Lowson, Hodgson, Dent, Townson, Simpson, Brown, Bruce, and many more.

From familysearch.org this may be Elizabeth's baptism Gateshead parish register extract

18 Sep 1826 parents Thomas Thompson and Jane

Also on familysearch ( PR extract) there is a marriage for a Thomas Thompson and Jane Elliott 3 Dec 1815 but it's in Sunderland 12m away from Gateshead

The Northumberland Border is very close so have a look at familysearch.org as there are quite a few marriages for Thomas and Janes round about the right time. If you check the first child's baptism date then you can work back from there and see if any marriages fit.

I am currently working on the theory that Thomas married a Jane.  This marriage produced four children - Jane, Robert, Elizabeth and William.  Jane died and Thomas re-married a Mary and had the following children - Christopher, Mary and Joseph.
I have found a death registation for a Jane Thompson in Jan 1832 in Gateshead.
I have found the following births/baptisms
Jane b 17 Sep 1822 bap 23 Jul 1823 in Gateshead, Durham
Robert  b 24 Sep 1824 bap 15 Oct 1824 in Gateshead, Durham
Elizabeth b 8 Sep 1826 bap 18 Sep 1826 in Gateshead, Durham
William b 24 Aug 1828 bap 14 Sep 1828 in Gateshead,Durham
For all of the above the Father is Thomas Thompson and Mother Jane - P00059-2
The only Christopher I can find in Gateshead to a Thomas Thompson and a Mary is b 10 Mar 1834 bap 2 Apr 1834.  But going on the ages in the 1841 census she would only be 17 at the oldest.
I have found the following for Joseph - Father Thomas Thompson mother Mary b 20 Aug 1838, bap 12 Sep 1838 Gateshead, Durham
Unforunately I have found no baptism for the Mary aged 4 in the Census 1841 and no corresponding marriage to a Mary in the correct time frame either.
Any help or suggestions on my theory would be greatly appreciated.

Hi again

I think maybe the death for Jane may be correct, from the BTs for Gateshead on familysearch.org she was buried 4 Jan 1832, aged 39 abode Oakwellgate, so age might fit . As you said there doesn't seem to be a marriage 1832 -1834 ish on family search, the closest is in Tynemouth to a Mary Richardson but Thomas is shown as a bachelor and of Tynemouth so that's not very promising.

Have you checked the Gateshead BTs for Mary c 1837 baptism record just incase there are any clues?

I have had a bit of luck today.
I checked the actual Gateshead BTs for a Mary in 1837 and found a
Marianne bap 13 Feb 1837 - Father Thomas Thompson, mother Marianne (father's occupation Cartman)
I checked the Gateshead BTs for Christopher bap 2 Apr 1834 and Joseph bap 12 Sep 1838 and both have father as Thomas Thompson, mother Mary (father's occupation Cartman)
Also Elizabeth's bap 18 Sep 1826, Father Thomas Thompson, mother Jane (father's occupation Cartman)
So I feel I am on the right track with Marrianne as being the Mary age 4 in the 1841 census
see below
From the 1841 census I have the following -
Gateshead,  ED 19,  Piece 296, Book 17,  Folio 12, Page 18, Line 23
Hundred - Chester (East Division)
Thomas Thompson abt 40,  Labourer, born Durham
Mary Thompson abt 20, born Durham
Jane Thompson abt 15, born Durham
Robert Thompson abt 15, born Durham
Elizabeth Thompson abt 14, born Durham
William Thompson abt 12, born Durham
Christopher Thompson abt 7, borh Durham
Mary Thompson abt 4, born Durham
Joseph Thompson abt 2, born Durham

I have also found a Mary b 1 Jun 1817, St Hilda, South Shields - father Thomas
Thompson, mother Jane, so perhaps the Mary in the census age 20 is the eldest daughter and not the second wife.  However when I look up the South Shields BTs Thomas's occupation is Ship Wright.
Is South Shields near Sunderland where Thomas Thompson marries a Jane Elliott 3rd Dec 1815 and are they both close enough to Gateshead to be on the right track.
Now only a few questions remain unanswered -
1. A marriage for Thomas Thompson to Marianne (Mary) somewhere between the death of Jane in 1832 and bap of Christopher in 1834
2. If Mary b 1817 is the eldest daughter and not the second wife where is the second wife in the 1841 census.
I am using this forum as a sounding board so any input or comments would be greatly appreciated.

South Shields is just up the road from Sunderland.

Two Thomas and Marianne might not have married, this sometimes happens,

Hi again

I a not convinced that your Thomas married  Jane Elliott in Sunderland in 1815, from familysearch again a Thomas & Jane Elliott were baptising children in Sunderland until 1834 so more investigating needed there.

Your theory about Mary aged 20 on the 1841 census could make sense but on the South Shields baptism Thomas' occupation is different and there was at least one more daughter bap South Shields (Isabella 1820). Could Mary 1820 ish possibly be Thomas' daughter in law? There is a baptism on family search in Gateshead for a Thomas Thompson 5 Nov 1820 parents Thomas and Jane , as he isn't shown on the same census could he be Mary's husband?

Also on familysearch there appears to be 2 more children baptised Gateshead with parents Thomas and Jane (you could check the BTs for them and the Thomas 1820 to see if they are your Thomas & Jane)
