Keane family of Henfield, Rathaspick
« on: Friday 13 January 12 11:26 GMT (UK) »
Hi!

I am stuck with my Keane family. The information I have is a Peter Keane (c1856 - c1911) married to Mary Ellen Ledwith (c1865- before 1911) and their 5 children:
Maggie (c1886 - ?)
Michael (1888 - ?)
Patrick (1890 - 1923)
Eugene/Owen (1895 - 1954)
Mary Ellen (1900 - ?)

Looking for any information about the marriage certificate of parents, death records on parents, any records on Maggie... the other 4 children immigated to NY in 1911.

In the 1901 and 1911 census the family was living in Henfield, a townland of Rathaspick... and in Griffiths ther is an Anne Kane as the tenant of land in Henfield... I "think" this is Peter Keaneīs mother???

Thank you!!

Gray (Sligo)
Eustace (Louth)
Frost (Suffolk)
Farrar (Yorkshire)
La Favor/Lefebvre (Quebec)
Mineard/Maynard/Mainard/ Maynord (Wiltshire/Monmouthshire)

here are the census links for reference :

1901 : Keane household, Henfield townland
1911 : Keane household, Henfield townland

The family were RC and all born in Co. Westmeath. Looks like the marriage would have been sometime between about 1882 and 1886.

I dont see a good match for a marriage under the name Mary Ellen Ledwith - but there is a possibility as Ellen :

  Name: Ellen Ledwith
  Registration district: Ballymahon
  Event type: Marriage
  Quarter and year: Apr-Jun 1885
  Volume : 3 / Page : 23

Name: Peter Keane (also indexed as Kane)
  [same index references as Ellen]

The location where the family are living on the census returns at Henfield townland is in the Registration District of Mullingar - Ballymahon is the district immediately west of this. It could be where Ellen/Mary Ellen originated...

A cert might be worth a try to see if that fits your clues...

Many thanks from a cloudy and cold Madrid!!!

It could be "Ellen" as for a while we thought the name was Helen because thatīs what my ggrandfatherīs wife but on his death certificate as the motherīs name...

You say the index references for the marriage between Ellen Lediwth and Peter are the same? It sounds good, and quite possible. The first child was 15 in the 1901 census, so the dates do coincide.

I will have to look into getting a certificate.

hi from a sunny, but quite chilly, Dublin!

the matching references is not a guarantee that they married each other - just that they both appear on the same page of the marriage register. Usually 2 or 4 marriages to a page - so a good chance that it fits... especially with a rare surname like Ledwith.

I got the marriage certificate back on Friday and yes it was correct! Yippee

Peter Kane (Keane) married Ellen Ledwith on April 27 1885. His father is Denis Kane and her father is Patrick Ledwith.

I thought I had found Denis Kane in the 1901 census. Peter was 45 at the time and the Denis I found was 70.. also Denisīs wife was named Margaret  as was Peterīs oldest daughter... BUT I saw that in Denisīs house there was a Peter already living there.... itīs hard to believe he would give 2 sons the same name   ???

The search continues....
