Jones/Gunn family help request
« on: Monday 09 April 12 01:04 BST (UK) »
New to all this...
My GG Grandfather Andrew Jones, born abt 1837 near Plymouth, Devonshire, arrived in NZ abt 1862. He married May Gunn in 1863 at Waikouaiti Otago. He died in 1896 in Waikouaiti.
Mary Gunn was born abt 1840 in Thurso Scotland and arrived in NZ abt 1860. She died in 1921 also in Waikouaiti.
We have copies of their death certificates giving their length of time in NZ and also their daughter Mary Christina’s birth certificates giving their birth details.
Any assistance in discovering how they came to NZ and who their parents were would be greatly appreciated.
We have searched the online passenger lists and spent significant time in the BDM sits in England and Scotland but no luck so far.

Hi, there is a tree on Rootsweb for Andrew Jones and Mary Gunn, and also one on Ancestry which you can access at many libraries. Both trees indicate that Andrew was born in Australia, with the Rootsweb tree specifying that he hailed from Sydney.
Regards, Craig.

All roads seem to lead to Oz, tralia that is. Familyseacrh, the LDS site, also indicates Andrew was born there, and even has the name and address of the person who submitted the information. It would be interesting to see where the submitters to Ancestry, Familysearch and Rootsweb got their info. from, as it contradicts the information you have, I guess, gleaned from your death cert., which is, I also guess, not helpful in recording the names of Andrew's parents?
Craig.

Thanks for the responses,I am aware of the other trees. I know who provided the details there. The family always thought he had come from Sydney, however Mary Christina's birth certificates indicates that Andrew was the "informant" and provided the details. I would assume that he knew where he was born.

He married May Gunn in 1863 at Waikouaiti Otago.

Hello...

Welcome to Rootschat :-)

Just a detail but the Presbyterian marriage register index says that the marriage was in 1864. To be precise, the first day of January.

Don't know if that's the date of the event or the date of registration. You'd need to purchase a copy of the marriage register to find out where the 1864 fits in.

Pre-1880 NZ marriage records aren't that informative but they do note "Condition" i.e bachelor, spinster, widow or widower. I'm wondering if a married Mary arrived in NZ with a married surname and that her first husband died in NZ, making Andrew JONES her second husband. Just a theory. Easy enough to disprove by viewing the 1863/4 JONES-GUNN marriage record mentioned above.

1863/5536 - Mary GUNN - Andrrew JONES (note the spelling of Andrew)

Hi again...

Am curious as to whether or not you've eliminated Mary GUNN b.13 April (May?)** 1838, daughter of Donald GUNN b.1816 and Elizabeth (Betsy) McDONALD b.1816

I'm sort of tracing her from Scotland to Canada and she has disappeared between the 1851 Ontario census and the 1861 Ontario census.

Before I start trying to find what happened to her in the intervening years (possibly death, possibly marriage, or maybe migration to NZ) I wondered if you'd already eliminated her, which would save me the effort. Seems a bit unlikely she migrated to Canada then NZ but stranger things have happened.

----

Here's a quick timeline for Mary and her family. May not be your Mary but I will post it anyway as it may help some other GUNN researcher.

Mary GUNN daughter of Donald and Betty formerly McDONALD
b.13 April 1838 - Campster, Latheron, Caithness, Scotland
LDS FamilySearch (original)
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Search/frameset_search.asp

**Scotland's People gives a date of 13 May 1838. Unsure if it's date of birth or baptism. Would need to purchase image of birth register.
