DAVIS, Frank&Marian (Crane)
« on: Friday 10 August 12 18:14 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find any ancestors or information regarding Frank and Marian Grace Rose (nee: Crane) DAVIS.  I was told that he was a silk merchant, they left England (early 1900's?) and went to Australia.  The only factual date I have is the birth of one of their sons (my grandfather) Frank Malcolm Crane Davis 1 May 1905.  He was born in Pancras.

Frank and Marian may also be connected with Henry and Ellen Elizabeth (Gibbs) Green who lived in Woodgreen.

Thank you! :)

dont see any sign of a marriage yet...

I do have my grandfather's birthday certificate.  That is the only document we have.  The story we got is that after he was born Frank and Marian did not want to take Frank Malcolm (my grandfather) with them to Australia.  There were older siblings that did go with them.  I do not know how many or what their names are.  I guess my grandfather didn't talk about it much.  He was supposedly left at an orphanage (don't know which one or how old he was) and the GREEN family heard about this and went and got him out.  That was the connection to Henry and Ellen (Gibbs) GREEN.  We are not sure if he was legally adopted but he took their last name.

I sure appreciate your help!  It's quite a story and I'm hoping to find out where Frank and Marian went in Australia, the names of my grandfather's older siblings and maybe even the name of the orphanage he was supposedly left at.

is there an address on the birth cert?

I think the English 1901 census might be a good place to start..  and knowing the location might help narrow down the correct family.

Yes there is an address.  I don't have access to it right now so I will have to get back to you.  Sorry.

One more interesting thing I found for Frank Malcolm (my grandfather), if this is the same person, from the 1911 Census (see below).  We do not know who Marion Stone is.  They list him as a visitor.

1911 England Census:

Frank Malcolmn Crane age 5  Visitor 14 Iffley Road, Hammersmith W

He was listed with:  Marion S. R. Stone age 35

Only the two of them were listed.

1911 England Census:

Frank Malcolm Crane
Age 5
....

I'm wondering about the surname... Crane. Surely it should have been Davis ?

Maybe Frank and Maria married after  Frank jnr was born ?

That could be a possibility (my mom wondered about that too)!  I'm pretty sure on the birth cert is lists her:  Marian Grace Rose Crane and my grandfather as:  Frank Malcolm Crane Davis.

If this is the case, marriage after his birth, did they have the other children out of wedlock or was this Frank Davis's second wife?  Did Frank Davis have an affair?

I think there may be more complications

I can see baptisms for a Leslie William Crane b 1896 and a Doris Marian Crane b 1898 both in Holloway. Children of William and Marion Grace Rose Crane. William is noted as a clerk or commission agent

IN 1901 Leslie is visiting the Aves family and Doris is lodging with the Brimell family in Wimbledon, along with a Stanley Crane aged 6

1911 has Leslie and Doris in institutions

Haven't found the possible parents yet.
