William Elliott DOB about 1863?
« on: Friday 30 November 12 12:51 GMT (UK) »
Help required.
My Great grandfather, William Elliott married Sarah Jane Jones 30/05/1896, his age stated on the marriage certificate  is 40 and a widower. When he married  would he have to produce some evidence that he was a widower? if so where would I look for this information. They got married in the register office in Birmingham. I have only be able to go back as far as 1891 in the census which shows he's married to Sarah and they have 2 children  Who's the other person he was married to??? Any assistance greatly appreciated.
Regards

You haven't given any details of where he was born

Is that a different Sarah than the one he married in 1896?

If so - have you checked freebmd for a likely marriage based on a couple of years before the first child was born?

A copy of one of the childrens birth certs will give her maiden name

EDIT

Is this the 1891 entry you are referring to?  If so - is there a reason why you have posted on the Lancashire board as there does not seem to be any connection to Lancs

Hi
If that is the correct family Carole, I think that they ended up in the Liverpool area.

If he was 28 in 1891 I wonder how he has been matched with the 40 yr old bridegroom in 1896?

Exactly - I think there is either a wrong marriage here or the wrong 1891 family

The header to this post shows birthyear 1863 but he would have been born 1856 as per the marriage cert

How old was Sarah Jane on the marriage cert?

Thanks for the quick response to everyone.
Sarah is shown as 30 years old on the marriage certificate. which makes her DOB 1866. She was actually born in march 1867. Sarah's family come from the Shropshire ,wellington and Dawley area, which have been located.
All I have for where William was born is Southwark London area.
They ended up in the Liverpool area where she died in march 1911.
I have nothing on William weather he had brothers or sisters, know his father was called William. On the marriage certificate shows he a plumber and his father was a commercial traveller ???
Regards

Hi
As William seems to get married after the birth of some children, do you have the birth certificate of one of the elder children with the  mother's maiden name on?
