Miss N. Pope and Miss E. Pope, two early lawn tennis players
« on: Friday 30 November 12 15:37 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for some basic biographical information on two early lawn tennis players, Miss N. Pope and Miss E. Pope, who were probably sisters or related in some other way. According to some reports in contemporary sports papers, Miss N. Pope was a native of Bath where she was a member of the Bath Lawn Tennis Club in the early 1880s, the decade during which she played most of her tournament tennis.

Miss E. Pope is even more obscure than Miss N. Pope, and played much less competitive lawn tennis than the latter player. Unfortunately, reports in early lawn tennis newspapers rarely carried a player's first name, so it is very difficult to find anything concrete on the players in question, even their first name(s).

In addition to the first name(s), I'm looking for a date and place of birth and a date and place of death for both players.

Any help would be appreciated.

Mark

^^^^ Thanks, I think the Miss N. Pope I'm looking for might have been called Norah or Naomi.

Couldn't see a Miss N Pope in Gloucestershire in either 1881 or 1891 census?

But I know, through my croquet connections ;D, that Cheltenham CC has a lot of members from further afield.

Maybe the tennis club similarly had far-country members?
