Hello. I have been searching without success for a very long time for information re the death of Ephraim Mansfield. He was the son of George Mansfield and Maria Hurst and was married twice in NSW but there is no record anywhere as to where he died or if he left the country. It appears as though he just disappeared and this makes me wonder if he "may" have changed his name. Can anyone tell me where to find records of name changes.. I am at a complete loss as to where to turn next in my search for him..

It looks like there was an act passed: registry for name changes after 1996

"During the nineteenth century the common way to affect a change of name was by an entry in a newspaper or by consistent usage. Then, as now, it was not compulsory to register a change of name. Between 1875 and April, 1996 the administrative responsibility for registering all changes of name in New South Wales was with the Land Titles Office. "

Ephraim: b 8 May 1845 Bury St Edmunds Suffolk
              m Sophia Barnaby 14 July 1869 Round Swamp NSW
              m Ellen Asekeller 15 April Erskinville NSW
   
The name Asekeller appears in the NSW births deaths & marriages but I am pretty sure it is a typo (mistake) as I cannot find that name anywhere else.

There is no record of Ellens death to be found either so I guess its possible that she "may" have remarried after Ephraims disappearance/death but they are both a mystery so any suggestions/assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Kimmiesdad and welcome to Rootschat. ;D

Ephraim's wife Sophia died 1891 at Rylstone he probably decided to remarry and move obviously as Newtown /Erskinville Sydney is a long way from the Lithgow area.

I cannot find any births to this couple nor to Ellen? Have you investigated this death possibility.
