british home children 1913 canada
« on: Friday 01 July 05 22:50 BST (UK) »
hi there,
just thought i would post this ive been searching for my great uncle frederick jefferies who left home after a family dispute no one was really sure wether he went abroad or stayed in uk, after many months of research i found him in canada where he joined the expeditionary forces in 1914 in quebec, further research shows he sailed from avonmouth in july 1913 on the royal edward, the canadian archives have him listed as a british home child even though he was 18-19 yrs old at that time. i cant seem to understand this , so can anyone suggest how i can follow this one up?

Hi Krissy,

As the legal age was twenty one, he was still a minor.  You need to find out which orphanage he was in and contact them to get more details.  His army records may give more information.

Hello

if you go to this link you will find an email address for a Perry Snow here in Canada - he is very knowledgable about the British home children who were sent to Canada. I would think he would be able to assist you with some advice about how to proceed with gathering records both here in Canada and in the UK.

The Attestation papers of soldiers who servered in the Canada Army inWW1 are on the Library and Archives Canada web site.

http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/cef/index-e.html

If you serch for the terms “Jeff*” and “Fred*” you should find the papers for 20 soldiers.

Krissy has the CEF signup, put under JEFFERIS, FRED G although it says Frederick Jefferies on the signup
Quote
he joined the expeditionary forces in 1914 in Quebec

welcome to rootschat jmcgill, hope that you enjoy the site

Krissy I never noticed before that all the home children on board were ages 16 to 19 ( 13 of 20 were 19)
 http://www.rootschat.com/links/08ew/
Just curious, I did a search for forename John no surname and several 20 year olds came up....I think they had to list any groups of under 21 year olds travelling together, so seems not all may be home children, as some are groups of three. However yours is a larger group with younger teens marked "Murdock party - Hone & Rivet party" http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/passenger/001045-119.01-e.php?sisn_id_nbr=6315&interval=20
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Did we have access to the passenger lists back then, Krissy? He is not listed with other teens, has an occupation "fitter"  http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/e/e144/e003592412.jpg
Frank Wiggins says British bonus allowed ( agents recruited desirable settlers such as farmers, domestics, etc. but the agent got paid) http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/e/e144/e003592419.jpg
Not what we'd normally see under home children ... and I didn't see the Hone & Rivet party in there but then I have troublw with the wee writing even when so-called "enlarged"
hi jj ,
thankyou for all that info now i will just go thro it and see what i can find, it was always a mystery why he was in the british home children as to my knowledge he was never placed in one, just decided after several arguments with his father that he was going to do his own thing, and that he did ha ha !!!!
