Hi Smudge,

Welcome to Rootschat!

Can you give any other information at all?  Name of your grandfather, any siblings? Where she was living later?  Children's names?  You perhaps know a little more than her name and year of birth.

Her birth is registered 1873 December Quarter York 9d 52, if you could get her birth certificate it would be a big help, to find her parents' names, father's occupation etc.

John

to know more about Martha's mother you need to know her maiden name to help find her on earlier censuses.

This is the only marriage of a James Fox to an Alice in the time range but it didn't take place in the area so I'm not totally sure it is the right couple.

Marriages Dec 1872
Fox  James    Auckland  10a 396
possible spouse
Raine  Alice     Auckland  10a 396

The way to know for sure is to obtain Martha's birth certificate. You can order certificates direct from the General Registry Office.

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

James is more straightforward to follow back.

1861 census RG9 1355 folio 55

George Fox 11  Stratton Dorset Son
William Fox 9 Stratton Dorset Son
Kezia Fox 7  Stratton Dorset Daughter
Annie Fox 4  Piddletown Dorset Daughter
Jane Fox 2  Piddletown Dorset Daughter

1851 census HO107 1858 folio 440

Elizabeth Fox 7 Bradford Peverell Dorset Daughter
Sarah Fox 5  Bradford Peverell Dorset Daughter
Ann Fox 3  Stratton Dorset Daughter
George Fox 1 Stratton Dorset Son
Robert Day 65  Not Known Lodger Unmarried Farm Labourer

1841 census HO107 284/5 folio 5
Billey Whits? Bradford Peverell Dorset
John Fox 25 born Dorset Ag lab
Elizabeth Fox 20 born Dorset
James Fox 2  born Dorset
John Fox 1 Mo Born Dorset

Marriages Sep 1838
CHURCHILL  Elizabeth    Dorchester &c  8 69
FOX  John     Dorchester &c.  8 69

Baptism Stratton
4-Aug-1839; James Critchell; s; John; Elizabeth; FOX; Stratton; Labourer

(probably more likely Churchill)

There is only about 8% of Dorset parishes covered on the IGI up to 1812 so you will probably do much better in tracking the Fox and Churchill families through the Dorset online parish clerk

http://www.dorset-opc.com/index.htm

1871 census RG10 2154 folio 72
Smiths Cross Drewsteignton Dorset
John Fox 48 West Moredon Dorset Head Married Gamekeeper
Elizabeth Fox 47 Portesham  Dorset Wife Married
Jane Fox 11  Broadmayne Dorset Daughter
Charles Fox 7  Piddletown Dorset Son
Anna Fox 14  Piddletown Dorset Niece

1881 census RG11 2419 folio 54
Hutton Somerset
John Fox 61 Morton  Dorset Head Married Gamekeeper
Ellen Fox 52 Portesham Dorset Wife Married

Deaths Mar 1890
Fox  Elizabeth  66  Axbridge  5c 48?3

1891 census RG12 1919 folio 40
High Street Hutton Somerset
John Fox  65 Dorset W, Moreton Head  Widower Agricultural Labourer

Deaths Jun 1897
Fox  John  74  Axbridge  5c 326

This may be Elizabeth's baptism. Her marriage details would confirm who her father was

Elizabeth Churchill
Christening:  12 AUG 1821   Portisham, Dorset
Father:  John Churchill
Mother:  Elizabeth

and sibling

CHURCHILL, Mary Ann
Christening Date:5 Oct 1823 Portisham, Dorset
Father:John CHURCHILL
Mother:Elizabeth

other children may have been baptised at Toller Fratrum

For James and Alice Fox and what happened to them you first need to eliminate Scotland

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

to see whether they stayed there or returned to England.

I know that this is an old message but I have only just come acrosss it and there doesn't seem to be a reply.

James Fox's first wife was Leonora Fooks and the marriage was in Dorset in 1865.

The family are a twig on my tree.
