What happened to Richard Bloom?
« on: Saturday 29 January 11 13:57 GMT (UK) »
Some fresh eyes needed on this one.
Richard Leake Bloom was born in 1837 in Lincolnshire.  He appears on the censuses up to 1881 in Hull; but in 1891 and 1901 his wife Betsy (b.1836, Lincolnshire) is down as married, in Hull, but there's no sign of Richard anywhere.  I've tried the Hull archives catalogue as well as general googling; and he didn't apparently die during those years, or up to 1920.  Any thoughts on what could have happened to him?
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.

It looks as if Betsy died in 1913, so you could get her death cert and see if it gives any clues - she might be described as a widow, or Richard may have registered the death?

He went to Canada.

Rose Hannah Bloom, aged 19, daughter of Richard Leek Bloom and Betsy Ann married John Summerville at Southwold, Elgin, Ontario in 1892 (on the familysearch site).

Richard and Betsy's daughter Rosanna isn't with her mother in 1891.

1891 Canada census:

http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/census-1891/index-e.html

shows a Richard Bloom aged 58 born in England living with a wife named Julia (!) in Yarmouth, Elgin, Ontario.  He is a farmer, and a Methodist.

Also in Elgin, Ontario, but in Southwold, is Rosie Bloom, aged 18 born in England, employed as a servant. She is also a Methodist.

Familysearch Ontario Deaths has Richard Leeke Bloom died 1908 in Southwold, Elgin, aged 77.
