Bassano Alex Davie lived there 40 years
« on: Tuesday 08 September 09 23:47 BST (UK) »

I am trying to find out as much as possible
about my cousin's grand uncle
Alexander DAVIE born Parish of Airlie, Scotland
died 14 July 1974
buried Quuens park Cemetery Calgary
July 17 1974

Head stone says Alex Hay    1883 1956
                            Alex Davie 1880 1974

Grave stone has  thistles on it,

I have just found out from the provincial Archieves reading room that his obit said
" lived in the Bassano area for forty years
  before reiteing to Calagary"
"Survied by a niece Mary Hay (Grey)"
Date of death was 14 July 1974

What was Alexander doing in Bassano Area?
Who is his neice.?  What is the HAY/GREY connection

How can I confirm that this is the Alexander Davie
born to Alexander Davie and Sophia Downie in 1880
Parish of Aitlie.?

Bassano seems to have oil/gas production links.

Do you know if your Alexander had sisters? It seems that Alex Hay was likely his brother in law, and if his obituary didn't mention a wife or children, then he must have married Alex Davie's sister and had a daughter Mary - who perhaps married a Mr Grey?

Do you have your Alexander in any Scottish censuses, and do you know his birthdate in 1880? We could try and find him in immigration/WWI records, perhaps.

Alexander Davie was born Sept 6 1880

his mother died September 6th. She and Alexnader Davie were married
in 1877.

Alexander and his sister Jane Barnet Davie (born 1878)
were brought up by their maternal Grand parents
based on 1881 & 1891 census.

Jane apperas in the 1901 cenasus with her widow grandmother
Jane marries in December 1901
James Hardie, Ploughman at the Manse Kirriemuir

In the 1881 Census there is a Susan Ogilvy  Grand daughter age 4 .
Born Kirriemuir also living with them.

I have been uunable to pinpoint Alexander in the 1901 census.

Neither do I have the father Alexander in any census from 1181 onwards o
or his death. He would have beenn born say 1856.

The obit in the 1974 Calgary paper
quotes an address  For his neice "Mrs Mary Hay (Grey)
811 8 Ave. N.E."

If you know 'your' Alexander had only one sister and you know all her children, and if he was definitely unmarried, I don't see how Mary could be his niece. Unless his father remarried and he had a half-sister.

"Mrs Mary Hay", of 8th Ave NE Calgary, might have been nee Grey? And Alex could be her (older?) husband or her father in law? Perhaps an obituary for him would clear things up.

 - page 30, mentions A. Hay of 811 8th Ave NE.  Apparently a WWI veteran - the one that fits on the WWI Canadian records was b. 1889 on his attestation form, though.

There is a submission for him on the IGI with his full name as Alexander Downie Davie ...(says born Nov.1 1880  ::) )
Also looked for Alexander as a home child, since he was one of several children raised by grandparents......but he doesn't appear on the records, nor in either 1901/1911 Canada census, although of course, he still may have come after 1911, but unless he signed up for ww1, or used his full name on a document somewhere, you'll have trouble finding him.
It surely doesn't look as though the one in Calgary is yours...

Good searching to find the A. Hay from that same address, jorose!

What if Alexander came to Canada, perhaps to the Calgary area, but moved on before he appeared on any census and moved south into the United States or went directly to the U.S.

I couldn't find him on the 1901 Scotland census but on the 1901 English census there is an
Alexander Davie b. 1880 Scotland, 21, working as a Coachman, domestic servant in the household of William and Sarah Brindle, St. George Hanover Sq. London, London.

1910 U.S. census there is an Alex Davis, 29, single, b. Scotland, both parents born Scotland, is a Partner to the head of the household, occupation miner.  This is Thomspson Township, Sanders County, Montana.
Sanders County is west of Flathead Lake and one of the towns within it is Thompson Falls.

1920 U.S. census Alex Davie, 38, b. 1882 Scotland, both parents born Scotland, Immigration year 1904, occupation Homesteader.  This is in Smead Township, Sanders County, Montana

1930 U.S. census Alexander Davie, 49, single, b. 1881 Scotland, roomer, Imigration year 1904, occupation Miner in a copper mine.  This is in the city of Butte, Silver Bow County, Montana

It looks like Montana records are not expensive to request.  I don't know what information would be held on their records but it might be proof either way.
