Need help with Harbidge
« on: Sunday 20 February 11 14:12 GMT (UK) »
I have in my tree a WILLIAM HARBIDGE (1842-1901) born in Worcestershire.

Possible birth record
William Harbidge
Year of Registration:    1843
Quarter of Registration:    Jul-Aug-Sep
District:    Bromsgrove
County:    Hereford and Worcester, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Worcestershire
Volume:    18
Page:    211

He married Sarah Smith (1848-1888) born in Arborfield, Berkshire. They married in 1875 in Birmingham, Warwickshire.

Name:    William Harbidge
Year of Registration:    1875
Quarter of Registration:    Jul-Aug-Sep
District:    Birmingham (1837-1924)
County:    Warwickshire
Volume:    6d
Page:    171

I have him in the 1881 census stating he was born in Bill End, Worcestershire. He lives in Birmingham with wife and 4 sons, John, Charles, George, Harry. In the 1891 census records he states birth place as Bromsgrove (which would match the birth record I found. He is living with no wife and his 4 sons and daughter Elizabeth.

I cannot find him in 1901, as I believe he died in this year.

Name:    William Harbidge
Estimated Birth Year:    abt 1841
Year of Registration:    1901
Quarter of Registration:    Jan-Feb-Mar
Age at Death:    60
District:    Aston (1837-1924)
County:    Warwickshire
Volume:    6d
Page:    247

What I would like to know is, who is William's father? I was looking for christening records and found a William born this year with father James Harbidge and mother Susannah (reported in some family trees to be Susannah Cartwright). But I cannot be sure. Can anyone help me with this??

Also any other information on this family line would be welcomed. I am directly descended from John Harbidge.
Warwickshire, Birmingham, Worcestershire, Shropshire, Bridgnorth.

1851 census,Bromsgrove shows a William Harbidge age 9 in the workhouse with an Eliza Harbidge age 13.
1841 shows an Eliza age 6 months in the household of Francis Harbidge/50;Hannah/50;Maria/15 & Caroline/10.
There is no birth recorded for Eliza & she may be the illegitimate daughter of Maria.
FreeBMD has an Elizabeth Harbidge marriage/1894/West Bromwich.
There are 2 other William Harbidges claiming to come from Bromsgrove born 1843/4,you need to make sure you have the right marriage, assuming you have you need to get it.

If it helps to rule in / out the workhouse census record, both William and Eliza'a birthplace were shown as Bellbroughton

Belbroughton's about 5 mls. from Bromsgrove & they may have not known their birthplace in later censuses as the information would have come from whoever placed them there. If they had been there for some time Bromsgrove would be the natural place to put down.I think the only way forward is the marr. cert.
