Thomas NEATE marriage 1787
« on: Tuesday 30 June 09 08:33 BST (UK) »
Please does anyone have access to Broad Hinton PRs and could look up for me the marriage of Thomas Neate to Elizabeth Hughes, which according to the IGI took place on 1/2/1787? What I am hoping to find is where Thomas Neate came from and even better who his father was? Any help much appreciated.
Regards
Tantan

Hi Tantan,

That is a submitted record so should be treated with caution.
Which of the 5 children listed on the record are you descended from?

Cheers,
Trish

Hi Trish
Yes I realise that some of these IGI submissions are unreliable, but it's the only evidence I have of Thomas Neate other than an Indenture bearing his name when he leased a farm in 1794. I suspect that he is a son of William Neate and Sarah ( nee Bathe), but if so his baptism record is not on the IGI with his siblings. I am not related to them but am researching the Manor Farm which Thomas was leasing at that time.

Hi Tantan,
Your research sounds fascinating. Hopefully someone will have access to parish records for you.

Cheers,

Hi Tantan,

There is a marriage licence bond

30 Jan 1787 Thomas NEATE 21 Bachelor of Wroughton and Elizabeth HUGHES 21 spinter of Broad Hinton. Bondsman Anthony BATHE of Wroughton.

Unfortunately this is no guarantee he was born in Wroughton only that he was a resident of Wroughton at the time of marriage. Interesting you think mother may be Sarah BATHE  ;D

Cheers Kris  :)

Hi Trish and Kris
Many thanks for all your helpful comments. It's useful to know about the marriage bond. If my suspicions are correct Thomas was connected with the family of William Neate and his wife Sarah (nee Bathe) who were the second generation of Neates to live at "my" farm. I had thought he was a son but there doesn't appear to be room for him in William & Sarah's family if the dates on the IGI are correct ( shall have to check the PRs I guess) - maybe he was using a second name and not the one listed in the records? Anthony the Bondsman could be his brother, or maybe a cousin??
I know about William & Sarah because I have an Indenture where they are named in a will by her father Anthony Bathe. None of them actually lived in Wroughton, but it was in Wroughton Parish.
Regards
Tantan

Good luck Tantan,

I have to point out the Bondsman is Anthony BATHE not NEATE  ;)

Cheers Kris  :)

HI Tantan,

Probably not much use, but - I grew up in BH, and still have family there.

I will have a look in a book I have that has lots of old pics in, and I can also take some pics if you like.

Best wishes
Paula
