McCormick/McAlister/Wilson
« on: Tuesday 16 March 10 21:22 GMT (UK) »
My husband's grandmother was Catherine McCormick (Kate) who came to Argyll from Antrim. It was always assumed that she came from Ballycastle because she ended up living in Campbeltown and, I believe, there was a boat between the two towns.  She is, however, on the 1901 census, living in Oban, working for a family named Hanratty who had originally come from Ireland. She married William Wilson in Campbeltown in 1904. Her parents were Archibald and Mary. It would also be interesting to hear about any McAlisters or Wilsons who went to Argyll at or even before this time, as they are also family names and, I believe, may have had their origins in Antrim.

What's given as her place of birth in 1901 census? Have you searched for her birth certificate yet (assuming she was born in Ireland after 1864)? What was her father's occupation on her marriage certificate? What religion would the family have been?
There's an Archibald and Mary McCormick in Co. Tyrone in 1911 (ages may not be accurate)- Archibald born in Co.Antrim:

Place of birth only given as Ireland.  Father's occupation on marriage certificate given as labourer.  Where would I get her birth certificate? Think she was born 1877. Religion R.C.  Thanks for hints.

Civil index is online but without exact location of family it will be difficult to pick out the correct one from index. See here -

Thank you very much.  I can consider all the options - one of which may be to go to Belfast. Now that I know what to do it'll be much easier!

Before travelling to Belfast you probably need to have a better idea of where the family came from in Ireland.

We're pretty sure that she came from the Ballycastle area of Antrim. Whether it was the town specifically we're not so sure.  There are a lot of families in the Kintyre area who originated from there, the McAlisters being one. My husband's Gt. Gt. grandfather, William Wilson, may also have come from there, but we have no information on him other than that he was married to an Armanella Davidson (or Davison) but have drawn a blank on her too, despite the unusual name.

This might be her birth from the LDS pilot site:
Catherine McCormick Birth 1877 Ballycastle registration district volume 6 page 91

The only marriage that I can find for Archibald C. McCormick and Mary is to Mary Ann Johnston in Londonderry in 1865.
You will find this in Emerald Ancestors, but I don't have a subscription.
In the LDS ordinary site this is that comes up for parents Archibald McCormick and Mary Ann Johnston
Father: Archibald Mccormick, Mother: Mary Ann Johnston

Do any of these names ring any bells?
1. James Campbell MCCORMACK born 2 Aug.1866 Garvagh, Londonderry, Ireland (page 480 in civil register)
2. Daniel Adare McCormick born 8 Nov.1872 Aghadowey, Londonderry, Ireland
3. Rose Allice McCormick born 28 Oct.1879 Cornvallagh, Londonderry, Ireland
4. Mary Ann MC CORMICK born 29 Aug.1870 Londonderry, Ireland
5. Agnes MCCORMICK born 2 May 1868 , Londonderry, Ireland

It could be that the family moved into Ao. Antrim before Catherine's birth.

James Campbell McCormick (1866), Daniel Adare (should be Adair) McCormick (1872), Rose Allice (1879), Mary Ann McCormick (1870) and Agnes McCormick (1868) - children of Archibald Campbell McCormick and Mary Ann Johnston- were all born in Carnrallagh (not Cornvallagh as in IGI) in Aghadowey Parish and belong to a different family.
