COPELAND Derby

 :P

Anyone researching the COPELAND family in Derby?

my gt grandmother was Mary Hannah Copeland she married George Nelson Grant in 1868 at St Alkmunds,
Mary Hannah was daughter of William Copeland & Benedicta Harris.

George Nelson died in 1915 at Leicester, from the 1891/1901 census he had anoher wife Annie (?) have not yet traced when Mary Hannah died.
Their daughter Mabel Grant (my g.mother) had been sent to Canada in 1889 as a supposed orphan, her father however was still alive and in  Birmingham, would love to find any information about Mary Hannah
any help would be appreciated, and can share family history

I have looked on the BVRI and found some siblings for Mary Hannah

COPELAND, William Francis   Christening
   Gender:   Male
Christening Date:   15 Aug 1847   Recorded in:   Derby, Derbyshire, England
         Collection:   St Werburgh
   Father:   William COPELAND
   Mother:   Benedicta

COPELAND, Emma Isabella   Christening
   Gender:   Female
Christening Date:   24 Apr 1853   Recorded in:   Derby, Derbyshire, England

   Father:   William COPELAND
   Mother:   Benedicta
Source:   FHL Film 1041167   Dates:   1843 - 1857

and this could be Mary's birth.

Copeland, Mary Hannah 1850 March Derby Derbyshire 19 5[17]3

Hope these may help you in some way.

 :)

Thank you Nickey, yes that would have been Mary Hannah, unfortunately there does not seem to be a record as yet of her death, thereis a bit of mystery in my family (no wonder we were never told anything!!)

Mary Hannah was last noted on the 1881 census for Perth, with her husband George Nelson Grant, my g.mother Mabel Grant, and I have since discovered that another son of theirs was at that time in Fechney Inductrial School in Perth (still trying to find out if tjere are any records of the pupils there) the other son Edward Plews Grant, from the first marriage of George Nelson to Mary Plews Street, in 1863 (Ockbrook Derby) she died in 1866  & George married Mary Hannah Copeland in 1868 (St Alkmund)
Edward was living in lodgings in Edinburgh, Effie their eldest dau was with her g.mother Euphemie Martin (formerly Grant) in Edinburgh, Mabel my g.mother was withher parents, why all the children were split up I do not know.
My g.mother was sent to Canada (by her eldest sister) as an orphan in 1889, I have by courtesy of Barnardos, receoved a record of her stay in the Marchmont Home inOntario up to when she left Canada in 1900.
She informed the Home that her father was alive & living in Birmingham, her g.mother dead (but it was not Euphemia, she was still living at the time, so imagine she must have been meaning the g.mother in Derby, Benedicta?)
I next traced George Nelson on the 1891/1901 census living in London, but with a wife named Annie! have not yet traced a marriage, or the death of Mary Hannah, he died in Leicester in 1919, there was an inquest because he died suddenly, and his wife Annie, was still with him.

I have a lot of puzzles yet to solve, it seems that an answer leads to more questions!!!

Sorry Maidmarian, I have not answered your reply to the query re Mary Hannah Grant.
I`ve just come back on the board after an absence (due to poor health I`m afraid)
I note  the death info you have given, but wonder if this could fit.
My Mary Hannah, appears to be with her husband and my g.mother in 1881 staying in Perth, of course I cannot be certain that this IS them, but could not find them on any other census, so as the correct names were given, had to assume it was them.
Also, my g.mother was born in 1873, so is it poss Mary died after the birth?
I keep checking on free BMD but so far have not had any success. The only thing I can be sure of, is that she MUST have been dead before 1891 since George Nelson Grant appears on the 1891 & 1901 census in London with a wife named Annie, she was still with him when he died in 1919 now in Leicester, I have wondered why he ended up there, but Mary Hannah`s brother lived in Leicester, so perhaps that was why.

Thank you anyway for your help, very kind and is appreciated
