Parents of James Caldicott
« on: Thursday 23 September 10 16:54 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I am trying to find the parents/family of James Caldicott born about 1841/1842 in Ledbury.  I have a possible christening date of 27 Feb 1842.
I believe James married Mary Ann Harper 4 Dec 1864 Dudley. BMD has marriage 1864 vol 6c page 10.  Another record from LDS says Cosely, Litchfield, Staffordshire.  Mary Ann b.about 1843 Kingswinford, Staffordshire.
I have found numerous variations of spelling for Caldicott and the one I am using comes from the marriage certificate of his daughter Esther Caldicott.  I also suspect another daughter Priscilla who was a witness to Esther's marriage.
Would a marriage certificate for James and Mary Ann list their parent's names?  Also, for Dudley, should I be looking Wrcestershire or Staffordshire?  I'm so confused!
Thank you in advance for any help with this.

I have found this possible contender for James in 1851. Born Bromyard but that is quite close to Ledbury.

HO107/1980/100/4
Gately Cross

William Caldicott, 54, Ag Lab, born Pencomb herefordshire
Elizabeth, 51 Charwoman, Leominster
George, 15, Stoke Prior
James, 10, Bromyard
John Pullen, relation, 6months, Bromyard

James's marriage certificate should give his ( and Mary Ann's) father's name and occupation so it would be worth sending for it if you are sure you have the right one.

Hi Husell (and genjen),

Here's the family in 1881, showing more children
http://www.rootschat.com/links/09un/
(Shout if you want 1891 and 1901 details)

I'm not having much luck spotting the family in 1871 to check what birth place James gives.

According to www.westmidlandsbmd.org.uk , the 1864 marriage was at Christ Church Coseley

The IGI christening is an extracted record:

James Collicott, 27 Feb 1842, Ledbury
parents William and Esther

There are 7 other children christened to the same parents in the same batch, James being the youngest:
William Collicutt, 21 Feb 1829
Thomas Collicutt, 25 Jan 1839
Benjamin Collicutt, 19 Apr 1834
Esther Collicott, 13 Jun 1836
Mary Collicott, 26 Dec 1826
Eliza Collicut, 3 Oct 1831
Christopher Caldecott, 27 Dec 1823

This should be them in 1841:

1841
HO107/425/1 14 22
Ledbury, Herefordshire
Homend? Street

William Collecot, 50, Ag lab
Hester, 45
Christopher, 15
William, 12
Hester, 10
Thomas, 4
Mary, 13

All born in county

1861
RG9/2060 5 6
Dudley, Worcestershire
High St

Ester Caldecut, head, wid, 57, b. Ledburry Herefordshire
William, son, unm, 32, Labourer, b. do.
James, son, unm, (age looks like 29 at first sight but could be 19), Labourer, b. do.
Ester, dau, unm, 24, b. do.

In 1871, Esther sr is staying with her now 'married' daughter Esther Hopley (RG10/2966 5 4), although it seems that David and Esther didn't actually marry until 1873.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate your help.  Wow! it turns out James' mother and now a sister were named Esther and you also found his sister's married name as well.  I guess that's why his and Mary Ann's daughter was named Esther.  I have not been able to find James and Mary Ann in 1871 either but I get to check out his mother in 1871 thanks to your find.
