I've researched one child who was taken away from his family aged about 10 - listed as 'found wandering' and 'troublesome', put into an industrial school (1892) and then sent to Canada (1895).  samthompson's idea sounds likely.  Do you have Mary in 1891?

Jorose,

Unfortunately, I do not have the family in the 1891 census. I have searched in the past but with no luck. I am wondering if the spelling had been changed? Maybe when the whole 1891 census is online, it will be easier for me.

Please tell me about your find ... I am intrigued!

Thanks for our interest.  ;)

The name of the person concerned has now been disputed ... it could be:

EDWARD KIRKBY

known as "Eddie"

Does this help?

So this would be the three-year-old on the 1901 census possibly?  There is an Edward Kirkby on the list of CREW coming into Ellis Island, in 1917 - he comes in twice, once aged 19 (May 04, 1917) once aged 20 (Jul 28, 1917) so either he had a birthday between the two or he is lying on at least one of this manifests.

He may have joined the Merchant Navy to get away from trouble at home - or he may have been sent off to something of this kind: http://www.gwpda.org/naval/rnboyest.htm to keep him out of trouble!
