Hi :)
Just a thought ,
I am trying to find a picture of Hartsholme park lake, when it was drained ,
and was hoping one of you Lincolnshire experts might know where one can be found :)
Eilleen.

Hello Eilleen :)
Has it been drained recently? I can remember it being pretty empty in about 1969, but didn't realise you'd be wanting a photo. ::)
That's an awful long time ago, isn't it?
-
Hi Geoff :)
hope all is well with you :)
I have scatty bits of imformation ;D
1, that it was drained and used to store ammunition during 2nd world war :o
2, that just after the war local lads used to make grappling irons and pull items out, one bloke who I spoke to got a machine gun :o
3, in the 1960s ??? it was completely drained to remove anything remaining .
this was when I hope some photo's were taken, :)
Eilleen,

The late 1960s was the time when they constructed or repaired the brick walls around the edge of the lake. I'm sure there would have been army (or bomb disposal) personnel around if they were after finding old ammo - but I don't remember any. :-\
I remember several yards of mud around the margins of the lake (it was never deep at the edges anyway). There was obviously lots of water left in the middle or the fish would have all died.
One thing I do recall at that time was finding a bat hanging on the lake wall, in the corner near the dogs' graveyard (if you remember that). :)
-
Dogs graveyard still there, :)
don't think the bat is ;D
I also remember when they were repairing etc in the late 60s, ::)
I believe it was an earlier draining, and defiantly to remove ammo etc, well that's what the older folk are saying . :)
but none of them seem to have been able to afford a camera.

this is good, but nothing about ammo ???
-
I remember one bit where there were piles of sand near the house and you could find bullet heads there, they must have used it as a range, although perhaps stories suggested people had been executed there were somewhat exaggerated. :o
I think at least two of the dogs' gravestones are in the visitor centre. There used to be four - Hector, Pompey ..... it's a long time ago.
-
Crickey Geoff ??? I 've just been trying to remove a bug of my screen ??? ;D
now I'm of to the photo board , I'm hoping some kind person will clean up a snap shot :)

Hi Eilleen, my hubby comes from Lincoln - Boultham Moor - and remembers it being drained and the ammo!!
we dont live in Lincoln but hes going to ask a friend who lived nearby the park (and still lives in L) and also his mum - my in laws were very keen amateur photographers around Lincoln!! if amyone has a photo...
Diddy

Diddy your a star :)
I will check here every hour ;D ;D ;D
only joking :)
but yes please bother them till they release the goods :o

Ok bit of news - mothers doesn't have any photos - she reckons Lincoln archives will have some.
apparently during the war the Home Guard used the park (father in law was involved). They took down the footbridge over the lake - so that the Germans couldn't use it!!. this was later replaced. so mother in law thinks any ammo found would be from the Home Guard.
still got one more person to check with about photos.

That's broadly what it says in the link that Eilleen gave-
"In 1942 the Army requisitioned the Hall. During the War, the Hall is used as an officers’ mess and the estate used for military training. Deterioration of the building fabric and interior fittings begins. White bridge removed."
I remember my dad saying it was used by the TA, so broadly similar.
I recall that there were only the main piles of the White bridge remaining and that it was rebuilt by 1965.
Perhaps Eilleen will remember a former mayer, Coun. "Jock" Campbell - he told me once that he had been stationed there during the war. :)

diddy and geoff thanks for imput :)
will try and get to archives , but never seem to have enough time ::)

Hi,
On a slightly different matter, Would anyone have a photo of Hartsholme House as it was in the 1800's when owned by the Shuttleworth family. I have an ancestor who was a butler for the family. I know it was demolished and I believe it is near the park. I would liketo include it a family book I am putting together. Hope someone can help.

I can remember the lake being drained, and the ammo being found, lots of 303 some mortars and grenades, the worst was the phosphorus bombs. most of it was located near the dog cemetery. sadly no photos
When the hall was demolished some of the rubble was dumped in the Finningley Rd/Tudor Rd area of Birchwood, and even though I have no proof I believe the most of it went into the old gravel pit that was behind the City School on Skellingthorpe Rd. the army left the hall in such a state of disrepair the the city council had no option but to pull it down.

I can see no evidence of (nor do I remember) any old gravel pit on that side of the road. See http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html?coords=495484,369640 and select (on right) 1932 1:2500 map.
Could you have been the Dave Lyon(s) who was in Mr Bennett's form at (old) City School in 1961/2? :)
-
What was city school is built on the area where the gravel washery was and the playing fields are over the gravel pit, the pit was later used as land fill, general house hold waste amongst others was put in there, it stopped being a waste dump in about 1971 and Skew bridge took over, the city school playing fields keep subsiding because of the decaying waste, but no one dare dig too deep because of asbestos and other pollutants that may be there
-
also you can look on old maps website and see maps dating back to the 1890s showing a ballast pit, apparently most of it used in road making

Yes, I'm sorry, you're right about that. :-[
I'm not sure when the tip closed, but the new school opened in the 1960s, as I can remember a certain teacher frequently popping along to Monson Arms for a couple of pints after 2pm. The last school year that could have been was 1969-70.
Are you the Dave Lyon who sat by the door in BB's class? :)
-
never went to City School. Went to Bishop King, Skellingthorpe Rd, St faiths, Osbournby Village school but not City
