I can remember the lake being drained, and the ammo being found, lots of 303 some mortars and grenades, the worst was the phosphorus bombs. most of it was located near the dog cemetery. sadly no photos
When the hall was demolished some of the rubble was dumped in the Finningley Rd/Tudor Rd area of Birchwood, and even though I have no proof I believe the most of it went into the old gravel pit that was behind the City School on Skellingthorpe Rd. the army left the hall in such a state of disrepair the the city council had no option but to pull it down.

I can see no evidence of (nor do I remember) any old gravel pit on that side of the road.  See http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html?coords=495484,369640 and select (on right) 1932 1:2500 map.

Could you have been the Dave Lyon(s) who was in Mr Bennett's form at (old) City School in 1961/2? :)

What was city school is built on the area where the gravel washery was and the playing fields are over the gravel pit, the pit was later used as land fill, general house hold waste amongst others was put in there, it stopped being a waste dump in about 1971 and Skew bridge took over, the city school playing fields keep subsiding because of the decaying waste, but no one dare dig too deep because of asbestos and other pollutants that may be there

also you can look on old maps website and see maps dating back to the 1890s showing a ballast pit, apparently most of it used in road making

Yes, I'm sorry, you're right about that.  :-[

I'm not sure when the tip closed, but the new school opened in the 1960s, as I can remember a certain teacher frequently popping along to Monson Arms for a couple of pints after 2pm.  The last school year that could have been was 1969-70.

Are you the Dave Lyon who sat by the door in BB's class? :)
