The 1862 death for Hannah Hayden age 76 ties in with the Hannah who was with the Hannah who was staying with James Hayden in Brading. The census states that she is his Aunt - Unmarried - age 74 born St Helens.

What sort of family papers. :-\
One census and probable baptism of James seems to indicate Hannah may not have married

Documents that were written by one of my late aunts who had done some research before me.
One of her children gave them to me knowing my interest in genealogy.

What source do they give for the father being William

She showed no sources but much of it has been correct so far so I have no reason to doubt her.
-
Have you then discounted the baptism for James with mother Hannah and no father :-\
-
Could it not be a misreading of the 1841 census occupation of Linen Draper which has attributed the surname of Draper to Hannah?
Pheno
-
That is a very good point Pheno ;D
Just posting this in case it is later applicable
Possible baptism for Hannah Hayden 1786 parents William & Deborah

Yes I agree that he is likely the Son of unm Hannah 1786, her Parents William/Deborah.
I agree there could be a confusion, 1851 Hannah says she is widowed and down as formerly Draper
-
Thanks Trish at least that confirms it is her occupation and not her maiden name :)

I would love to be able to track his dad down as that has alluded me so far.

As posted on here Hannah's occupation was 'formerly Draper' Where does the evidence that her maiden name was also Draper come from :-\
Hannah's will indicate that she was a spinster so not married and that ties in with the baptism of Hannah Hayden in 1786 parents William & Deborah. James baptism also names her as the sole parent.
What documentation confirms that James father is William Hayden. :-\
-
If James is illegitimate then it is unlikely that you will find the name of the father unless the mother took out a Bastardy Oreder against the father for maintenance.

Well, I am pretty sure that it was William. I do not think that James was illegitimate as I am sure my relative's notes would have said something.

Do your relatives notes give a baptism for James

I have just had a look and she gives a burial date of - 21 Mar 1848 - at the age of 42 in the IoW.
So we know that his mother's name was Hanna b. 1787 according to 1841, 1851, Census for the IoW (with a query on the maiden name of Draper) and, according to my relative, the father was William Hayden. Her d. 04 AUG 1862, she is listed in Ancestry.
In the 1851 Census, she is listed as living with her 4 Grandsons and one granddaughter. Her other 3 granddaughters were living with their mother Jemima at another address. no sign of James which ties in with his death in 1848. However, in the 1841 census, she is living with her daughter-in-law and children but no James.

Burial for Hannah Hayden shows as 10 August 1862. Probate Index and newspaper both give date of death as 7th August 1862. There is only one Hannah Hayden showing on the index at that time in IoW
Deaths Sep qtr 1862
Hayden Hannah
I.Wight 2b 284
GRO index gives age as 76.
Probate index give an address of Sea View.
1861 she is staying with Nephew James who was born around the same time as your James.

He states she is unmarried which ties in with Spinster on the probate notice.
