Could some kind soul please do a look-up for the baptism of an Ellen (possibly "Helen") RIVERS sometime between 1833 and 1840?
The 1861 and 1871 censuses show her as Ellen and Helen RIVERS, born Newport, Isle of Wight.
In the 1881 and 1891 censuses, under her married name of FORD, she stated that she was born in Newport, Isle of Wight.
Thank you.
Regards,
John

In 1861 George a Coachman, Rebecca and two of their sons are still on the Isle of Wight.
So maybe as Ellen was still quite young when the family moved there and considered it was home.

It's not the Wolverton family. Thanks

Thanks, but that's the Wolverton family, and I have ruled them out.
She married a Robert Joseph TOE (same as her mother's maiden name) in 1860, and was still married to him in 1902 when Robert Joseph TOE died in Wokingham.
The one I'm interested in married a FORD and had a son, Hugh Rivers FORD (mmn RIVERS) in 1872.

Why Rivers?
Because that was her maiden name, as shown on the 1861 and 1871 censuses, and the maiden name on her son's 1872 birth registration.

So are John Saunders Ford with wife Ellen (born Godshill Isle of Wight) and son Alfred Saunders Ford the wrong family?

If Ellen's maiden name was KINGSWELL, I'm afraid so.
FORD, ALFRED SAUNDERS;
Mother's maiden name: KINGSWELL

I still can’t see the Rivers as a maiden name…?
Hugh Rivers Ford when he marries gives his fathers name as Hugh Rivers Ford, clerk deceased.
If this is the correct Hugh, he is living with mother Ellen in 1891 & 1881 when she is widowed.
Can you please show the reference to the civil registration with MMN Rivers?
Thanks :)

Just to help identify the right person The father of her child was supposedly Hugh FORD but I do not know what is on the birth certificate, perhaps jwynne can tell us. They do not appear to have married.
FORD, -
Mother's maiden surname: RIVERS
GRO Reference: 1873 M Quarter in WANDSWORTH Volume 01D Page 585
In 1861 Ellen RIVERS is a barmaid in Egham, Surrey aged 26. In 1871 she is Helen RIVERS, a housekeeper in Kingston, Surrey aged 30. In 1881 she is Ellen FORD, a housekeeper in Brighton, Sussex aged 45. Her birthplace is consistantly Newport, Isle of Wight.
I cannot see a baptism and there doesn't seem to be anyone with that surname living on the Isle of Wight in 1841.

That's what I have.
She may not have been married, but she said she was Ellen RIVERS from Newport in 2 censuses when she was single,
The fact that Hugh Rivers FORD's marriage certificate said his father's name was also Hugh Rivesr FORD (including middle name) is clearly very unlikely, but people put what they know (or what they're told) or what they want on marriage certificates. It doesn't mean it's correct.
