Title: Margaret Thomson 1846. Dumbarton, Scotland
Post by: bucksboy on Tuesday 04 October 22 20:01 BST (UK)
She married Reuben Gilson 11 May 1869. Anderston, Glasgow. Her Parents were John Thomson(Occ.Blacksmith) & Susan(nee' Baird).

Margaret Gilson married Enoch Bedson, 18 Apr 1885 • West Gorton, All Saints, Lancashire. (Both were widowed).

I cannot find a birth/baptism for Margaret Thomson/Thompson, nor a marriage in ScotlandsPeople, for her parents John & Susan.

Do you have a particular reason for posting this on the Dunbartonshire forum?

Because there is a family lodging in Old Monkland in the 1851 census that includes John Thomson, 35; Susanna Thomson, 30; both born in Ireland, and children including Margaret Thomson, 7; and Livinia Thomson, 2, both born Old Monkland.

Look it up at https://freecen1.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl and see if you think it could be your Margaret.

They were still in New Monkland in the 1861 census, but I have not yet found them in 1871.

There is one curious thing, though.

There is a Catholic baptism of Margaret, daughter of John Thomson and Susan McCloskey, in Airdrie on 3 March 1844. And a death of Levina Thomson or Smith, aged 78, in Paisley in 1928, mother's maiden surname McClaskey. IF Levina is the child in the 1851 and 1861 census, could it be that Margaret got her mother's surname wrong on her marriage certificate?

In 1881 Susan Thomson, widow, mother-in-law, aged 58, born Ireland, is in the household of Timothy Hughes. Timothy Hughes married Elizabeth Thomson in Old Monkland in 1872. Elizabeth Thomson or Hughes died in Paisley in 1929 aged 74, mother's surname McCluskie.

Susan Thomson or McLuskie, 70, died in Neilston in 1896, no mother's name recorded.

What if it was Susan McCluskie's mother (Margaret and Lavinia's grandmother) who was Susan Baird?

The family Forfarian has found was in Muirkirk, Ayrshire in 1841:

In 1871 they are in Brown's Square, Langloan, Old Monkland:

John Thomson, 53, labourer in iron works, b. Ireland
Susan Thomson, 48, b. Ireland

Who are the witnesses on the 1869 GILSON-THOMSON marriage certificate?

What church did they marry in?

The 1871 census for Chester England shows Margaret Gilson (nee Thomson) wife of Reuben as born in Dumbarton Scotland, about 1845.

In 1881 census the Gilson family is in Lancashire, and Margaret is still showing as born in Dumbartonshire. Two children with them John 10 born Dumbartonshire, and Levina 6 born Salford.
(The name Levina is interesting.)

Margaret (a widow, age 38) married again in 1885 Lancashire to Enoch Bedson. On the marriage record her father is John Thompson, deceased.

In the 1901 census, Margaret is still recorded as born in Dumbarton.

Dumbarton was where she apparently came from in most UK census returns, hence Dunbartonshire.

All I have to go by are the marriage certs.

Why would she have her p.o.b as Dumbarton, why not Old Monkland.

I'll buy another batch of credits, and investigate furrther.

Thanks for the help Forfarian and GR2.  Most welcome.

What church did they marry in?

Anderston, (Church of Scotland), Glasgow, as mentioned.  Witnesses were Hugh McClean & Elizabeth Stewart.

Yes, that's correct.

Checked for Old Monkland, nothing there.  But found a baptism at St Margarets, Airdrie.

Yes, Margaret was born to John Thomson and Sussana McLusky.  3 Mar 1844.
Sponsors, John Thomson & Bridget Sheridan.

Still not sure if this is the correct.!

I am adding this because it links Dunbartonshire with a Susannah McLuskey, and maybe needs further investigation.

There's a baptism of Martha McLusky, born 8 January 1850, in Duntocher Free Kirk register on 7 April 1850, parents John McLusky and Susan Cathcart, and a baptism of Elizabeth McLuskie, born 20 April 1841, in the same register on 16 May 1841, parents John McLuskie and Jean McGown.

Also their Margaret was born about ten years before the wife of Reuben Gilson.

In which case the Old Monkland family is a red herring for which I apologise.

Better to have red herrings than no herrings at all  ;D

Son John was born in Dunbarton in 1870 - what is the address on that birth?

How about this?

Death in Cardross, Dunbartonshire. Susan Thomson, married, died 30 April 1856, aged 39. Father John Kenna indexed on SP as Kennon), mother Elizabeth Kenna, maiden surname Baird. Registered by John Thomson, widower.

Address is hard to read - could be Thimble Street, Renton, Cardross.

PM me with your e-mail address if you want to see the whole certificate as I'm not allowed to post it complete.

I am not sure why you think John Thomson and Margaret Buchan have anything to do with John Thomson and Susan Kennon ??

Name: James Thomson
Gender:Male
Birth Date: 24 Apr 1856
Birth Place:Cardross,Dunbarton,Scotland
Father: John Thomson
Mother: Susan Kennon
Have you found this James on the census?

No, but there is a John Thomson, as per my previous reply.  I bought the cert from S.P.  But it is totally unreadable.  I have asked for a better image of it.  It could be either John or James.?!

As Susan Kennon had died the same year, iirc.  Perhaps his father remarried the Margaret highlighted in the 1861 Scottish Census.

John W. Thomson (a joiner, born abt 1831 in Inch WIG) married Margaret Buchan (from Greenock West) on 27 May 1853. Their first son, John was born in 1854.

From the information posted in reply #15, Susan (Kennon) Thompson died in 1856 Cardross, after given birth to a son named James a few weeks earlier.

Sorry, I don’t understand how you are connecting these people.
