Post by: Gadget on Wednesday 10 January 07 21:59 GMT (UK)
Hi all

This is really a joint posting from JulianB and me  :)

It looks as if the general consensus is for a Glasgow meet at some time in the late Summer/early Autumn. We perhaps should now start getting organised.

There are some ideas on the general thread but we would welcome more suggestions for activities and especially volunteers from that Central Belt that PaulE has discovered  :)

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,186195.0.html

Also, we would love to hear the pros and cons from previous Meets.

One "con" that I can think of from similar events I have been involved in .... good maps.
Just remember the majority  of the people are new to the City/area and may not know their way around.

I went to the Manchester meeting last year (2006). It was fab.

I didn't stay as I live here so can't comment on accomodation. This the itinery we had http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,92823.msg604152.html#msg604152

Some family history and info but fun on the big wheel (which I didn't do)

It was a fab day but most of all was the fun of meeting  Rc's

My 'Con'  was that I had to leave early as could not get childcare sorted but  I will if I am away in Glasgow  ;D

Happy to help G anyway I can

Maps - whole heartedly agree. Also transport maps, etc. Glasgow has a (usually) excellent public transport system.

It would be nice if we could have some kind of meeting place, especially if we arrange for the odd talk.  Are there any organisations that might let us have somewhere or that we could  hire for cheap?

Re leaving early - is it to be one day/two days. As lots of people are coming from afar, maybe the weekend option would be best.

Thanks for input so far  :)

I for one will be staying in a hotel for one night.

As some people may be bound by train/plane times the next day, it maybe worth arranging something informal - breakfast and a wander around somewhere of interest.

I thoroughly enjoyed the talk given by the archivist last year.

Also, pre-booking a place for lunch would be a good idea, somewhere that caters for all tastes and budgets - not too much pressure there then  ;)

When Trystan and I were arranging the Manchester Meet, we first marked on the Map a few places and ideas that we thought would be fun and educational for the day. Then it was a trip into Manchester on the Tram to check out places to eat  :P and to see how long it would take to walk between these places. Once we found a place to eat we asked if we could reserve a table for the event, most are only too happy to help.

The talk by the Archivist of the Cathedral for many was the highlight of the day, this was organized by phoning and asking if they did offer talks etc In our case the talk was *free* but they were thankfull for a donation to help there work. I guess most larger facilities should have an archivist who may be able to help.

At the end of the evening we made sure that everyone was back at there hotel/bus and tram OK before we headed off home.

We kept pretty much to the timetable as this gave people the option to join in through the day, by swapping a few phone numbers offline this made sure everyone was looked after.

Sarah :)

Having "milestones" in the day is good.  So if some can only make the evening then book a table for a dinner somewhere and post details here.

If we can arrange a tour of one of the archives or something else related to FH again specify a time so if anyone wants to join that then they can.

I'm happy to help organise and late summer/autumn should be ok for attending (I will know next week if I am taking exams in November - fingers crossed I'm not).

I'll be in Glasgow regularly from the end of Jan to May in classes so happy to check anything out for timetabling.

Best to get the ball rolling by brainstorming some ideas on a "What could we do thread" or here  :)

eg The Tenement House...

Pride of the Clyde
http://www.clydewaterbusservices.co.uk/gallery.html

Tall Ship
http://www.glenlee.co.uk/

We could contact these people and see if we could arange a talk?

If you can let us know your no-no days in Sept/Oct, Pam, when you get them, we can then focus in.

You might have noticed that I'm in Glasgow next week so will be doing a bit of a rekkie. I'll see if I can find some eateries and work from there.

Lots of ideas coming in - we might have to decide what to leave out  ;)

The old Glasgow Club that Pam mentions looks a real possibility. I think it's worth making contact with them as soon as poss. They not only have experts who might give a talk but also do guided walks.

PS and the riverbus - I've heard good reports on that and planned to go last year but didn't make it. Anyone been on it?

I've had a think and a trawl of possible meeting up places - reasonably central but with something interesting to look at while waiting for everyone to arrive and with refreshment facilities.

The best that I can come up with is The Peoples Palace and Winter Gardens on Glasgow Green.

It's dedicated to the social history  :) of Glasgow and, I think, a must at some point anyway:

http://www.glasgowmuseums.com/venue/index.cfm?venueid=9

It's slightly out of the very main centre but still within walking distance - something to check out.

Sounds good to me  :)...although my mum lives in Glasgow, I never have and so don't really know much about the city. As a meeting place it also has the added bonus of parking for those travelling by car and there are plenty of buses to it from the centre of town.

Trys and Sarah's idea (or whoever's it was!) for meeting at the station bar at Victoria Station for the Madchester meet was a good one - easy to travel into, and plenty big for a crowd of RCers - pretty much otherwise empty at 10.30am.   The lunch venue was well-chosen, too: not too expensive!!!
The Cathedral Archives talk was inspired!  Any hidden archives in Glasgow we should know about?

These peeps look interesting ... http://www.gwsfhs.org.uk/content/gcaprojects.aspx?AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1

Happy to help in whatever way I can - I could DTP a programme then save it as a pdf for you, when finalised.

Blimey - there's loads to see and do

People's Palace in Glasgow encapsulates most of Glasgow history bed recesses, mining etc and even Lullu's clothes and Carole Smillie's shoes!

But if anyone looking for weavers round Paisley let me know know cos that's where I'm form and loads of things to see (including 'live loom'in Pailsey museum) but not always open so I'd need to check (joebhoy ditto with Kilbarchan weavers stuff).

Also Clyde ship building museum if anyone has rellies who may have worked there.

or maybe just a wander down Sauchiehall St ?

Loads there to see so we need a plan!

If folks want weavers then transport required so we must plan (our car not that big!)

For everyone arriving at the airport, there is a direct bus link from airport to city centre.

In Glasgow the bus terminates at Buchanan Bus Station. The key stops on the way are adjacent to Central and Queen Street Station and George Square.

Thanks all for the latests ideas, comments and suggestions.

I'd like to assure you all that, behind the scenes, Julian and I are getting our heads together and looking at various options/possibilities. We are basing our timings on those from the Manchester meet - i.e. gather together from 10am on the Saturday with the possibility of taking in the Sunday morning as well.

When Pam has her course timetable, a firm date can be made.

I have been looking at my own collection of historic street maps of Glasgow - the earliest is from the 1960s and the latest is about 2 years old  :) If we are concentrating on  central Glasgow, there are 3 main areas -

1. The old town and Glasgow Green- St Mungos, People's Palace, etc.

2. The central area - Central Station and the Argyll St Arch, The Lighthouse (views over Glasgow from  Macintosh Tower),  Bath Street, Sauchiehall St, Tenement House, etc.

3 Kelvingrove

I've not listed all the possibilities in these areas - there are links on a number of the previous messages and on the other thread.

City Tours, open buses appear to connect all these places - an £8 ticket is valid for 2 consecutive days and can be used as often as needed.

The Riverbus to Braehead and back costs £7.50 return.

We need someone to suss out possible lunch and supper venues - maybe 20-30 people attending.

Think that's my latest summary  :)

PS

One thing that I Forgot to mention was the possible meeting up places.

This should be fairly central, undercover and with refreshment facilities at hand. Apart from Central and Queen Street Stations - not all that inspiring but both have the necessary attributes - there are the Buchannan Street Galleries and Princes Square Galleries (small shopping malls) . Further out is the Peoples Palace.

Any other suggestions for meeting up welcome. Allowing for numbers mentioned above.

My initial thread title is a bit unweildy and I will re-name it for clarity.

All sounds very good Gadget, when inquiring for prices there are normally discounts for groups of people, sometimes you only have to ask and there is so much more....

The Itinerary for Manchester was quite packed, in real life we did not get everthing done and not in the right order. The day evolved around the people who attended as we had numbers we could keep in contact with everyone who was running late etc...

Hello,

I received a PM from julianb asking if I'd learned anything from the event in Belfast last year that I could pass on to you. Offhand I can't think of anything. You seem to have matters well under control at this stage. I wish the same could be said about the Dublin event. That board seems to have gone quiet so I'd better post a message to see if I can arouse interest there again.

Since this event is in Glasgow why don't you post a message on  Glasgow Forum.  (http://www.glasgowforum.co.uk)
You might get a few more members for RootsChat and some on the spot assistance.

Hiya Julian,

Thanks for the link to the Dublin event.

I am learning more in my efforts to organise the Dublin event than I did in organising the Belfast event. RootChatters can be backward in coming forward. I suggest you use as many means as possible of keeping in touch .. not only the board on RootsChat and the PM system but also emails, messenger sites like MSN and Yahoo, personal meetings for the organisers and volunteers and regular phone calls. You can do this through the various messenger sites.

I've a few friends in Dublin and as the RootsChatters in that area seem to be somewhat sparse on the ground I'm having a meeting with those friends as they know Dublin slightly better than I do. Meets are a great idea. I'm on several UK Forums .. Belfast (that one is the nearest site I've come across to the Chat Room here. Things really get going there when some well known members of RootsChat are on line ... sorry to disappoint you ... no names are going to be mentioned ... you are welcome to register and enjoy some good auld Belfast craic with some auld acquaintances who, like myself, are still posting regularly here as well), Birmingham, Glasgow, Manchester and Newcastle. Possibly we could encourage more people to join RootsChat by posting a message about this site and its events on those sites. I've seen the RootsChat advert in the magazine "Your Family Tree" I wonder if Sarah and Trystan would consider an advert about the Meets in that magazine. Now I've spoken to several people who have not heard of RootsChat. The site needs publicity and using websites works well. Belfast Forum are not using press advertising but our membership is increasing steadily.

If it's like the Belfast meet a friend of mine attended with her grand daughter. I'm sure you can bring all your living relations, Stephen. Bring your boss too. Introduce all your friends to Rootschat. The Meets are great fun. RootsChat is like a big family so the Meets are open to all.

Also like to get together a small 'pack' which would include maps, itinerary, accommodation list, background info and bits of wider interest for those who want to spend more time in Scotland. This could then be downloaded and printed out ahead of time.

What we had in mind is putting the pack up as a file attached to a posting, which people can then download.

While it's not the done thing to "advertise" on threads, I had assumed that providing lists of hotels etc in a separate file would not contravene the "rules" or indeed the spirit of Rootschat.  So this is the intention, unless otherwise advised by the "management" :)

Putting it into a file is a great idea. I'd think that should be OK. I'll be interested in the opinions of the "management" The same will have to be done for Dublin.

I had a super time walking around Dublin last May, Christopher  :)  I still  have maps and guides as well, I think. It was really only around Trinity and the Goverment buildings but I think it would be well worth including - ending up at a wee look at a page from the Book of Kells.*

Hi  :)

Many reasons for not that time - see other thread - Dublin meet (we need a gap), peak holiday season (Scotland Full at this time of year so fewer concessions, people may want holidays with families), midges (for those going on to West coast/Perthshire, etc).

Not really up to much information giving at the moment but went to People's Palace this morning - top floor and Winter Gardens closed because of high winds - had a natter to one of the info people, etc., etc., etc.

It seems as if I avioded all that nasty weather as well.

The People's Palace had a small exhibition of 19th century ladies outfits - concentrating on colour/dyes. Very fine attire but I can't see how women managed to do anything wearing such robes.

I liked the steamer - went inside and pretended to be a convict - then OH peered through the bars at me and grinned  ;D

I was told that if we went on a weekday, one of the Glasgow Green/Park Rangers would be able to take us around Glasgow Green explaining all the history, etc. Apparently the first monument to Nelson was the one there.

Just feeding back a few bits - I'll send my expenses in later  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

non-challenging environment for anyone arriving on their own
something to do until you meet up with the others
good cafe/ place for lunch-good food and newspapers, magazines, soups, juice etc
central
plenty of space for a large group
staff who won't hassle you
easy to chill after a long journey

Thanks for your suggestion. The CCA is OK if you happen to be into contemporary art in Scotland (which I am) but is seen by many as a wee bit pretentious  - full of people like me, no doubt  ;D :o  ;D

It's also not all that easy to find if you've never been to Glasgow before. I think that Central Station might be the best meeting place - althought I wasn't in favour originally.

A further point. The CCA is having budget/funding problems. The Scottish Arts Council has recently had major changes to its funding policy, etc. Also, it must be remembered that this is a Family History/Social History event.

Regards

I was only suggesting it as a place to gather-central station is a pain in the arse to get to if you arrive at Queen st station and not a nice place to hang around ( my sister in law threatened with a knife there) . I'd have thought saucihall as central as it gets, but hey.If you decide to meet at the station, let me know where you are going thereafter and I'll try to catch up.

I don't have a problem
I thought this was a thread where any rootschatter could join in-I'm "perplexed" by the tone of voice which is unusual for this forum
I have never suggested holding a meeting at the CCA-as I imagine you have never suggested holding one at a railway station. Instead, I offered it as a friendly and non-intimidating place to find each other before moving on, since the thread seemed to be asking for opinions
I had thought of making the journey-not so sure now

Sorry  if you took offence - Gadget and I discussed what you had posted (and your previous posts) and were not quite clear where you are coming from.

We're very keen on suggestions for the meet, but we also know that we can't please everybody.  It's also incumbent on us to read (and try to remember) all the posts on this (and the previous thread).  We are in danger of knitting fog if we try to take every sugestion on board.

We hope to tie down a date very soon, and then will start filling in the details about what the meet will cover and where we will assemble etc.

We know that as details firm up, some people who planned to come will start dropping out, eg the date isn't right for them, or the proposed itinerary is not to their taste.  We can't help that - our aim has to be to put a package together that reflects the wants of those people who originally expressed an interest in attending back in last September/October.

I repeat that we are still keen for ideas and various spies have been sent out to do some on the ground research to feed into that planning.

Apologies for the length of this post - but briefer replies can be more easily misunderstood.

As Julian says, we are trying to come up with an itinerary that everyone will be happy with. A number of people had expressed a dislike of the CCA to me via PMs.

Trying to organise this meeting is not an easy task as people have different wishes. We hope to build flexibility into the programme so that people can opt in and out at various points.

I have checked the previous thread and my PMs concerning this meet and cannot find a message from you expressing an interest. Those who have are listed here:

I don't know how I missed this thread before - probably because I tend to stick to the areas that I am searching in.

I am very interested in attending this meet -luckily for me it is almost on my home patch.

If I  maybe so bold to suggest a venue,  The City Inn just along from the Scottish exhibition centre station is a superb venue ( I have used this venue for a number of events that I have organised in the past) It is reasonable and the food they serve is good.  It is located on the banks of the clyde underneath the last remaining giant crane in the city.

If I can help in organising anything then I am happy to help.

Hi Monique

I'm sure that anyone who's interested in meeting up in Glasgow will catch onto this thread in due course, without Gadget or anyone else having to trawl through dozens of posts to assemble a list of possible attendees.  Let's remember that setting up a meeting is a purely voluntary affair.  Personally, I'm happy to leave the organisation in the capable hands of Gadget, julianb et al, and wait a few more weeks for some firmer details.

And of course, anyone can set up a meet (or a mini-meet!) - Keith Batemen ad I are considering a mini-meet inthe Cheshire area (or maybe somewhere else) in the spring.  Caps will be optional

Cheers

Well, thank you for being a welcoming lot (but surely a bit bonkers if you're happy to include non-Scots like myself!).

I will now keep in contact with this thread - I can always sort out a Glasgow meet with visiting my old friends in Kippen.  But..... it's always going to be a bit odd, if people are there researching their Scots ancestry??  And there's me, a bit of an oddball??!!

It's one of my favourite cities, Ann.I was told that my Kirkcudbrightshire ancestors did a bit of 'carting ' to there in the early 19th century but I've not found anything yet  :-\

The people are lovely, which is, I think, what makes it such a super place  :)

Ann - I don't doubt it  :)

I've visited Glasgow in the 1980s, visiting some friends who lived there; and then in the 1990s at a conference.

Glasgow was/is great - the arts, the scenery, the architecture, the social life (!).

Clara, I also haven't any Scottish ancestors, I'm just coming along to chat put faces to names and visit general places of interest in Glasgow.

I went to the Manchester meet last year and I had visions of a dusty old room with some Rootschatters gathered around a micro fiche reader.  Of course it was nothing of the sort.

The meets are for anyone who has a general interest in family history.  If someone wants to research their own surname interests whilst visiting Scotland then so be it but we won't be breathing down their necks at the microfiche.....

we'll probably be in the pub  ;D ;)

Quite appropraite, Cal.

Years ago I was in Glasgow and was getting a  train north from Queen St at around 1.30 pm.  I dropped into a bar for a quiet drink and got chatting to a chap and his mum who were having a  wee dram after doing their shopping.  About 5 whisky's later, I was running down sauciehall Street, late for my train, feeling charged up like I had a Claymore in my hand.  ;D ;D ;D

Post by: julianb on Thursday 25 January 07 23:07 GMT (UK)
I found this - don't think I can deliver it properly, but someone has to  ::)

Toast To The Lasses

The main speech is followed by a more light-hearted address to the women in the audience. Originally this was a thank you to the ladies for preparing the food and a time to toast the 'lasses' in Burns' life. The tone should be witty, but never offensive, and should always end on a concilliatory note.

In this day and age we shouldn't be thanking the ladies for preparing the food because we have an equal opportunity kitchen (but I wish someone hadn't hired that Ramsay fellow with his profane language).

I know little of the lassies in Burns' life, but I'm sure they were fine, intelligent women who made the most of their time on this earth.  Many people on Rootschat could be looking for them right now.

So here's to all you lassies looking for your roots, especially those associated with Scotland.

Cheers

Hi -

Right Other Half (Julian B) you leave Gordon alone - he;s OK. F's and blinds a bit but that man gave me a personally cooked souufle at Good Food Show  in 2005 so Ok in my book! ( and I did share with me mates) was delish! (So leave him alone)

Loads to see Glasgow wise and actually the proposed point - Peeps palace is a good place and handy for a lot of places. If peeps are into the Paisley side of weaving (paisley pattern and all that) let me know cos could arrange for trip to weavers cottage in Kilbarchan (my mum didn't work for council for nowt) and ditto could sort out something in Paisley.

However loads to see in Glasgow but I would say anyone coming from afar who wants to book slot at records office in Park Circus (the Glagow version of GROS) book as soon as we have dates cos it's like putting kids name down for  Eton getting in there.

Book ahead and only open mon -fri!

Lookng forward to meeting you all

Annx

Julian and I are working on a booklet which will include virtually everything you'll want to know about Glasgow and it's environs. However for those who might want to book ahead, here are links to an extensive list of Glasgow accommodation:

http://www.scottishaccommodationindex.com/glasgow.php

http://www.visitscotland.com/sitewide/bookglasgow

http://www.holidaycityeurope.com/glasgowhotels/

http://www.glasgowguide.co.uk/hotels.html

http://www.glasgow-guesthouse.net/

Note the usual chain hotels (Hilton, Holiday Inn, Jurys, etc.)  can be accessed via their individual sites.

We are preparing a list of hostelries that might need detailed checking to see that they match Prue's 'moderate' drinking requirements - any volunteers?

Some people may want to get away from the crowd, though, so it's up to the band of travellers. Also, some are staying with family. What do you all think?

My master plan is to book next month when OH gets paid.

If I leave it untill nearer the time there will be more bills to pay and I will end up being absent  :( ::)

So, Poll Pm me with the details and if it's in my price range I'll meet you over breakfast - we can talk in whispers and try not to stir our tea too loudly (don't you just hate that - sorry that's another topic :))

If not I'll stay in the poor relation side, keeping with the true sense of my family history  ;) :D

Changing the subject slightly. I'm trying to put a few serious trips together  :)

Is anyone going to be anywhere near the Mitchell Library in the not too distant future? It has been extended/renovated (BBC Scotland last night and their website) and I would be interested to have feed back on the cafe and possible tours.

I'll e-mail them about tours on a Saturday when I get some feedback.

Thanks

The dates are in my work diary now so won't double book.

Poll is the hotel one with a 'prickly' name? ;)
If so I have stayed there it is great. Think I will get there Friday night and home on Sunday (need to sort out my young teenager for the weekend)

Think a few of us might be making a weekend of it - perhaps we might even meet up on the Friday evening at one of Prue's hostelries  :D

We'll also need to check up on the Celtic/Rangers fixtures  but it's a bit too early and that's just not cricket  ::) ::) ::)

To help with your own planning (especially those coming some distance),  Gadget has already posted links on accomodation here

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,206729.msg1099576.html#msg1099576

and I repeat the link to a very snazzy map on central Glasgow:

http://www.glasgowguide.co.uk/maps-full.html

To fill out the picture, I've attached below a travel information pack - covering how to get to Glasgow and how to get around the city.  Hope people find this useful.  Questions welcome, and if necessary, we'll update it.

As a little extra because I'm preparing all sorts of goodies for you all  :) :) , it's probably best to book within the subway 'oval' - see Julian's pages - or close by.

Glasgow has a whole range of accommodation/prices which I gave links to. I've only stayed in some of them. I've lived in the West End around Kelvinside/Kelvingrove, which is very pleasant, and stayed in various hostelries in the Central area (see my map link). I haven't really stayed or frequented much the new up-and-coming Merchant City but it is also a possible area.

Most Central area accommodation doesn't have parking.

Hi  :)

I'll add you to the list

Briefly, because we (Julian and I )are still planning and organising, we hope to gather together at a central Glasgow location about 10.30 am on the morning of Saturday, 13th October. The day will be a mixture of 'heavyish' and more light hearted (emphasis on this) Family and Local History in and around Glasgow.

We would probably all have lunch together and maybe a boat trip and other events with evening entetainment, etc. Sunday morning has also been pencilled in for more gatherings  :D

I am delighted to report that, after negotiations with that erstwhile journalist, Bill Blunt, he has agreed to part-sponsor the Glasgow Rootschat meet-up.

In an effort to simultaneously boost the Scottish economy, he has agreed that anyone who attends the meet-up and stakes a claim by leaving a comment on his blog (http://bluntbyname.blogspot.com/2007/04/in-praise-of-tunnock.html) before the end of April can claim a free Tunnock Caramel Wafer at the Glasgow gathering.

He's also asked that, while you are there, you might like to 'Fuel His Blog' - but has stressed that the Tunnock Caramel Wafer is yours to keep, whether you do so or not.

It's a brave man that accuses Bill Blunt of nostalgia!

And not a fridge magnet in site!  ;D

It doesn't have to be dimly lit, Cal, but if you don't want anyone to see you consume it, then dimly-lit it will have to be.

Note to other attendees: Glasgow does have some pretty good places to eat. It is not necessary to bring your packed lunches, teas and suppers in a cool box!

I think we should try and come up with a rootschat badge that does incorporate a wee bit of something Scottish (a thistle/some tartan maybe   ???)

seeing as both Poll & I have lost our hats  ;D

Badge and Scottish theme duly noted.  Gadget and I will work on this on.  Watch this space

Of course, we could issue tartan pigtail bunnets for everyone .....

Hi All

I am very sorry but for various reasons I am not going to be able to do any more to help in the organisation of the Glasgow meeting.

I'm sure that Julian would be grateful for a volunteer to help.

Take care all of you and have a lovely time

You're all very kind - now could the other two of me please step forward  :D :D :D

I'll try to get there but my timetables are a bit iffy and I've got a lot of work on but we'll see.

In the meantime - work for someone  :o

I was hoping to get to the Mitchell to look at the new extension  - case the joint, have a look at their eatery and try to speak to some guides.

Imber has recommended a rather nice pub/eatery in the old carpet factory opposite the People's Palace - need a case of this joint as well.

See, even when I'm not organising, I'm organising  ;D ;D ;D

Am I too late to add my name to the list? I'd love to join in.

I live just outside Glasgow in Clydebank so if there is anything I can do to help with the setting up please just ask and if I can, I will.
