Do you have any ancestors or siblings for James Sturrock was born 1821 in Cupar/Coupar, Fife, Scotland, whopursued a successful career as a hairdresser/perfuner in Edinburgh (1841), Glasgow (1851, 1861) and London's Regent Street (1981, 1991) and died in Putney 1898.

Do you have a father's name from his marriage to Fanny (from 1881 census)? If so you can seach on Scotlands People http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk to find likely candidates. When you have the names of his parents you can search easily enough for their children in the OPRs.

I am currently trying to find information about Sturrocks as several ancestors of mine worked for them in London. Thomas Wilkie and at least one of his brothers - Peter and John worked and trained with Sturrocks in and around 1840 - 1860.  Thomas was their manager in The Strand in about 1875.  His son, my grandfather Thomas D Wilkie also trained & worked there around the turn of the century. We still have some of his notebooks recording ingredients for Hairdressing Pomades and perfumes.
Would like to find out if Sturrocks have any records from this period also what was the connection with St. Andrews and Cupar in Fife. My family ran a hairdressing business for almost 100 years in Cupar -called Wilkies Hairdressing Saloon from 1849 - 1943 when T.D. Wilkie died and the business sold to a Mr Smart.
Hoping you can help establish the connections between Sturrock and Wilkie.

Thanks

Hi Elsmere

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

How far have you got with tracing your line? You would need to compare family surnames to see what the potential links could be and whether the families were related.

I found this entry in the 1851 Census:

John Sturrock 33, Hair Cutter & Porlanier Employing 17 Assistants, b. Cupar
Isabel Sturrock 52, mother, b. Cupar
Sarah Harkin 34,servant
Helen Nesbit 19, servant

Address: 41 Northd Stt, Edinburgh St Stephen

You then had the other entry that Tycho has for James in 1851:

Jas Sturrock 30, Perfumer Mair Dresser (master Employing 4 Mant Boy), b. Cupar
Eliza Sturrock 30, wife b. England
Grace Odonnell 54, mother in law, b. England
Wm Sturrock 19, cousin, b. St Andrews
Christina McGregor 22

Address:Rosebank Cottage Grant St, Barony Glasgow

If you check on Scotlands People, there are a number of Sturrock entries that are probably related in the last Wills & Testaments: Two for James above, one for Isabella Hutchison Sturrock, who shows in 1851 with son John, and a last entry for a Peter who died in St Andrews.

Also, from this site www.scottap.com/family/Lanark/MLNTestaments/MLNTestaments1S.html:

William STURROCK perfumer Duke St, Edin d 28 Jan 1833. Mrs Isabella HUTCHISON or STURROCK relict of defunct (also shows on SP).

In respect of the Will entry for a Peter Sturrock, there is this entry showing in 1841:

Peter Sturrock 39, hair dresser
Mrs.  Sturrock 40, b. Scotland
Jessie Sturrock 19
Jane Sturrock 17
John Sturrock 14
Peter Sturrock 13
Alice Sturrock 11
William Sturrock 8
Agnes Sturrock 6
James Sturrock 5
Ann Sturrock 3

Address: North Street, St Andrews Fife

Hi All,

I'm new to this and just stumbled across your posts.

I am trying to trace the grandparents of Peter Sturrock, who lived in St Andrews, married to Alicia Dalgleish. I've just discovered he was born and baptised in the Ceres Associate Church on Nov 21/26 1800. Siblings Janet, 1789, James 1791, Agnes 1793 and William, 1798. His parents were John Sturrock and Mary Archibald, who are buried in Ceres. Peter and his wife and some of his family are buried in St Andrews. Can anyone help with this line? I haven't looked at his will. His brother James was in India at some point. Peter was also a hairdresser and perfumer.
Thanks. Cazmak54

Dear cazmak54

There does seem to have been a clan/guild of hairdressing Sturrocks!

I'm not sure I can help you but your information is interesting to me as your William Sturrock b1798 may have been the William Sturrock who is the father of my James Sturrock (a great grandfather of my partner).

The Sturrock data I have is as follows:

William Sturrock (d1833) married Isabella Henderson (b1801).

He had the following children: James(b1821), John(b1821), Mary(b1826), Peter(b1831), Andrew(B1842) and possibly a William(b1832)

James married first Eliza O'Donnell and had a son William(b1852). He then married Fanny Clarke in London and had the following children:  Dulcie, Mabel Fanny(b1883), Winifred Rose(my partner's grandmother b 1887), James Dudley(b1893) and Ronald Alfred(b1895). He died 1898.

James seems to have started as a hairdresser/perfumer with his mother in Edinburgh, then set up in Glasgow and by 1881 had a thriving shop in Regent Street, London right next to the Cafe Royal.

James and his mother Isabella were born in Coupar, Fife.

If you have any evidence linking your william to mine, please let me know.

Dear Tycho,

Have just been reading through your message and trying to check out what I've found today. I looked at the original register of the Ceres Associate Church baptismal records and William lawful son to John Sturrock and Margaret Archbald was baptised February 18 1797. They had an older son John born abt 11 Nov 1786 whose baptism is not recorded in these records. Next Janet born 16 Jan 1789 and baptised 18th, then James born 13 May 1791 and baptised 14th, then Agnes baptised Oct 6th 1793, then William, and finally Peter born 21 Nov 1800 and  baptised 26th (he was baptised by Rev Mr Peter Taylor, and he was named after the minister).

The connection is confirmed I think by the census information for Edinburgh 1851 with John Sturrock and his mother Isabel, both born Cupar, then the will information that Isabel Hutchison was married to William Sturrock who died in 1833. She then appears in the 1861 census with son, John, and nephews from St Andrews Peter and Andrew Sturrock, who were I believe two of Peter Sturrock and Alicia Dalgleish's sons.

John Sturrock, the eldest son of John Sturrock and Mary (or Margaret) Archibald, remained in Ceres and was a linen handloom weaver. He married Anne Archibald, who was likely the daughter of James Archibald and Anna Bone or Bayne. Ann Archibald was also baptised at Ceres Associate Church on 30 Dec 1787. John and Anne Sturrock had at least two sons, John born abt 1819 and Peter abt 1821.

Janet Sturrock (b1789) married John Bernard in Edinburgh in 1811.

James Sturrock (1791) only know that he erected the gravestone to his parents in Ceres and had been in India.

Agnes Sturrock (1793) no info.

*William Sturrock - your line I believe.

Peter Sturrock (1800-1878) hairdresser and perfumer St Andrews married Alice (Alicia) Dalgleish (b Dundee) and had a large family including Peter (c1831) and Andrew (c1842) whose dates fit in with the two on the 1861 Edinburgh Census.

I haven't looked at any of the wills on Scotlands People.

I hope you can make this out.

Cazmak54 :)

Dear Cazmak54

Thank you for your data. It looks as though there is a link. I take it the Ceres Church is in St Andrews. What kind of church would that be?

It seems to me your Peter Sturrock (1800-1878) may well be the Peter Sturrrock of the 1841 census listed by MonicaLesl earlier in the topic. His date, as well as that of his son Peter, are only a little different. Moreover the 8-year-old William in that same list could be the 19 yo cousin staying with my James Sturrock listed earlier for the 1851 cenus.

Good luck!

Be careful with John Sturrock.
The family appears to follow the tradition of naming the first born son after the grandfather.    Thus John Sturrock's first born son is John Sturrock,  whose first born son is John Sturrock.

Complications come when the second son,  Peter Sturrock has children as his first born son is John Sturrock.   You need to use the census data on the pages before and after the person you are looking for as John is very common.     One breakthrough I had was the one house which had grandfather, son and grandchildren.

I have information which mainly comes from Scotland's People and from Ancestry trees.     I take Ancestry trees with a pinch of salt but list I have come up with seems pretty accurate.   I also used Family Search.

I have John Sturrock (b. abt 1797in Ceres) who married Ann Archibald (b. abt 1798 in Ceres).    He was a hand loom weaver.   His 1851 census detail is:    resident at 12 Castle Street,  Ceres.    4 in household,  John Sturrock  (head),  Anne Sturrock  (wife), Peter Sturrock  (son),  Jane Sturrock  (daughter-in-law), John Sturrock  (g-son), Mary Anne Sturrock  (g-daughter),  George Sturrock  (g-son),  Barbara Rae Sturrock  (g-daughter),  Christian Butler  (servant).     Only 2 children known:  John Sturrock (b. 1819 in Ceres) and Peter Sturrock (b. abt 1821 in Ceres).

Their son John Sturrock (b. 1819 in Ceres) married Grace Lister (b. 1822 in Largo) on 23 January 1846 in Ceres.     Grace was daughter of William Lister and Mary Forbes.     The Listers and Forbes are my research interest.    They had 5 children:  John Sturrock (b. 1847 in Ceres)  who married Mary ?  (b abt 1847 in Wemyss); Mary Sturrock (b abt 1949 in Ceres) no marriage known;  Peter Sturrock  (b. 1858 in Ceres) no marriage known;  Isabella Young Sturrock (b. abt 1861 in Ceres) who married David Stewart Abbey (b. abt 1859) on 17 June 1886 in Glenshee  (they lived in the Aberdeen area; and Maggie M Sturrock  (b. cir 1850).

John Sturrock  (b. 1847) had 4 children:  John  Sturrock (b. abt 1869 in Kemback); William Sturrock  (b. abt 1873 in Ceres); Grace Sturrock  (b. abt 1876 in Ceres);  and Alexander Sturrock (b. abt 1879 in Ceres).

The names that provide a link to the Lister family are Grace,  Alexander and William.

Any information you find on Lister and Forbes from Ceres would be appreciated.

Dear Ian

Thank you so much for your Sturrock data. Two queries. I have 1786 not 1797 as birthdate for the John Sturrock married to Anne Archibald (but I can't recall my source for this right now). More curiously, I have him as the son of yet another John Sturrock who was married to a Margaret Archibald. So I'm wondering if and how Anne and Margaret Archibald were related.

Our ultimate hope is to find a photograph of 66 Regent Street near the turn of the century which shows our James Sturrock's hairdresser/perfumer's shop right next to the Cafe Royal. I have seen a 1910 photo but by then it was a different shop.

My grandfather, Thomas Dall Wilkie, born 1878 in Kensington London, was manager of the shop in 66 Regent Street. On the death of his father, Thomas - who also worked for Sturrocks in London, Thomas Dall Wilkie returned to Cupar, Fife where he took over the family hairdressers business until his death in 1943, when 'Wilkies Saloon' in Bonnygate, had been in business for almost 100 years.  I would like to discover the connection between the Sturrock and Wilkie families, which must have been long standing and through several generations.

You are right.    I checked my data.
Here is Scotlands People census data which I used to calculate birth dates.
1851 census:    Residents at 12 Castle Street,  Ceres were.
John Sturrock,  age 64,  head,  linen hand loom weaver,  born Ceres.
Anne Sturrock,  age 63,  wife,  born Ceres.
Peter,  age 30,  son,  teacher,  born Ceres.
Jane Sturrock,  age 27,  daughter -in-law,  born Perth.
John Sturrock,  age 6,    grandson,  born Merrybank,  Perth.
Mary Anne Sturrock,  age 3,  granddaughter,  born Blairgowie.
George Sturrock,  age 2,  grandson,  born Bairgowie.
Barbara Rac Sturrock,  age 6 months,  granddaughter,  born Blairgowie.   Could she be Barbara Rae Sturrock?
Christian Butler,  girl age 19,  house servant.

Even though Sturrock is not my main interest,  I have 5 John Sturrocks who are all related.   Born abt 1876, d1819-d1894,  b abt 1845,  b 1847,  b abt 1869.

Abt = about (means that the true date is within one year as it was calculated from census age backwards).

I have only one Archibald.

I have Sturrocks in my family, mainly it seems from Ceres in Fife. The Peter Sturrock born abt 1821, is my great great grandfather. I have a dob for him of 28/4/1821, but I don't know where I got it from. I can't find a birth for him on Scotland's People. He seems to have married a Jane McIntyre and was a teacher in Blairgowrie. I may have him with a second wife Isabella (although I can't find a death for his first wife). Has anyone been researching this line???

Hello Tycho!
Like you I have different dates for John Sturrock. I have a John Sturrock b abt 1760 in Ceres marrying a Mary (or Margaret) Archibald born in Ceres on 16/12/1785 in Ceres according to LDS. I have their eldest child being John born 19/11/1786 in Ceres who married Ann (or variations of) Archibald. She was born 28/12/1787 in Ceres and christened on the 30th. I have at least 3 children for them. John born abt 1819 in Ceres who married Grace Lister (that comes from here), Peter Sturrock,my great great grandfather born abt 1821 (I can't find a birth record for him) but from somewhere else I got a date of 28/4/1821 and David born 1/5/1825 in Ceres and christened 9/5/1825. Peter had at least 4 children, John born abt 1845 in Merryback, Perth, Jane Anna born about 1848 in Blairgowrie, George (Monro) Sturrock (my great grandfather) born 9/1/1849 in Blairgowrie and Barbara Rae born abt 1850 in Blairgowrie.

Way back in this exchange one contributor supposed that Ceres was in St. Andrews.

No, Ceres is a village about 8 miles West of St. Andrews.  (It is where I was brought up).

You asked what kind of church the Associate Church would be.   At that time there had been numerous splits in the established presbyterian Church of Scotland.   I reckon that the Associate Church would have been a congregation of the First Secession.   See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Associate_Presbytery and in the "History" section click the link to "Associate Presbytery".

At one time Ceres had 5 churches, I believe,  because of the various schisms and rifts, but I am not sure where the "Associate Church" was.   You have got me wondering - I will try to find out!

That didn't take long!

It is now not known where the "Associate Church" was, but this should tell you what there is to know:
http://www.scottishchurches.org.uk/sites/site/id/10415/name/Ceres+United+Presbyterian+Church+Ceres+Fife.

The photos on this site are unreliable - the pix shown here don't relate to this building at all (naturally, since it is not known where it was!) but show the Memorial Hall, once the "Relief Church".

It is unreasonably difficult to get your head round all the splits and re-unitings in the Scottish churches!

I have just tracked down a son of Peter Sturrock and Alicia (Alice) Dalgleish - William born about 1833 in St. Andrews. He seems to have moved to London where he married Sarah Screen in Marlebone the 3rd quarter of 1864. They had 3 children all born in Kensington - James the 4th quarter 1866, Peter William the 4th quarter 1868 and Andrew Douglas the 3rd quarter 1870. The whole family shows up in the 1871 census, but Andrew Douglas died 3rd Quarter 1871 in Kensington. I can't find them in the 1881 census, so I searched the 1881 Scottish census. Father William and son James seem to have moved to Edinburgh where they were hairdressers. I don't know what happened to Sarah or Peter William...does anyone know anything about this branch of the family?
Have just found out that Sarah did indeed move up to Edinburgh with her husband and eldest son James. She had another son, Alfred, born 8/4/1879. Tragically on 27th Sept 1880 she committed suicide by hanging in Edinburgh. James eventually moved to Maryhill, Glasgow (still a hairdresser) and married Annie Irvine Harley who was born in Maryhill. I have found 4 daughters and a son so far for them. In the 1901 census he is listed as a hairdresser (manager). I still don't know what happened to Peter William Sturrock...

The James that married Fanny (as far as I can see) was the son of Peter Sturrock (born 1/12/1800 in Ceres) & Alice/Alicia Dalgleish. She was born in England, but that's all I know...

There would appear to be a connection between James Sturrock (1821-1898) and my John Sturrock (abt 1780-?), who was also listed as a 'Perfumer and Hairdresser' in Cupar, Fife on the record of his marriage and on his children's baptismal records.

John Sturrock married Amelia Bonnar, the daughter of Alexander Bonnar, a brewar, in Dundee, Angus on 15 January 1810. They had at least three children in Cupar, Fife - Alexander (b. 1810), Emelia (b. 1812) and Charles (b. 1817).

I am a descendant of John and Amelia's daughter Emelia Bonnar Sturrock (b.1812), who married William Glass Stewart, a teacher, in Cupar, Fife on 24 November 1833 and who emigrated to Canada and had a large family.

Now that I've read this post, I will chase up what connection there is between William Sturrock and John Sturrock, since my John Sturrock and William's son James were both perfumers and hairdressers in Cupar, Fife! It would be interesting to hear back from anyone who might already have made the connection. My sources are from original documents downloaded from ScotlandsPeople.
