Hello RootsChatters,
We are looking to provide free webspace on RootsChat for RootsChatters to place their web sites. We are not quite ready yet, but we are trying to gauge your interest.
This will be open to any registered user on RootsChat.
Our main criteria will be that your site will need to be related to family or local history (or of interest to family or local historians), and that no advertising links are placed on the pages.
The user can be a company, individual, group or society... and you can advertise your own products or services (again related to history) on the pages if you wish.
The format of the webspace address will be something like:
www.rootschat.co.uk/history/mypages
(where the 'mypages' is changed to the title of your website)
Would this be of interest to anybody?
(Please feel free to reply to this message with some idea of what you might use the RootsChat webspace for)

Some questions answered:
Q: Can I have more than just one web page?
Yes, you can build a site with LOTS of pages, we don't have a strict limit on the number of pages so you can build a large website.
Q: Will you put popups on my pages?
No, we will not put popups on any of your pages, nor will we open popups when people leave your web pages.
Q: Will you put any adverts on our pages?
We don't plan to put adverts on any pages. BUT... if we find that 'bandwidth' becomes a problem then we may ask for our adverts relevant to family and local history are shown to cover costs to keep things free.
Q: Will it always stay free then?
Yes
Q: Can you help us set up a web page?
We can put you in touch with volunteers willing to help you if you wish. However, at this stage, because this is a totally free service we cannot offer support. We are however human, and if you ask really nicely then perhaps we can help you. ;)
Q: We already have a website, but would like to move it over to RootsChat, can you help us?
In most cases yes, that won't be a problem.
Q: What's the catch?
We ask that you mention RootsChat, say that it's really useful (etc..) and put a link to us. :) :)
Q: How 'safe' will our webpages be?
RootsChat is on its very own server in a very secure datacentre. Data is backed up automatically every day to another location, and our 'firewall' is maintained by a team of professionals. (We do however ask that you keep a copy of your own website on your own computer in the event of failure.)
Q: Who has copyright of my web pages?
You do.

I'd be interested. :)

I would also like a web site but dont know how to start.Would i be able to put all the info on for certain names that i have researched over the past 3 years, its what i have collected and saved in folders. The info is of no use to me now but if someone was searching the same surnames as myself they would be able to look at all the info i have on these srnames,ie, births marriage and deaths, and might just find something they have been looking for.Anyway would i be able to do that.Anne. :)

Hi
I already have my site hosted at Rootsweb but be happy to move it to Rootschat providing the limit on page numbers was not restricted. I built my own fro scratch and would be very willing to help others with the building of their own.
I think it will really enhance rootschat, which is already asplendid addition to the genealogy websites around at the moment.
So, Yes, count me in!

I'd be interested to
also if it had an idiots guide, it took me ages to work out tribalpages and that is very simple ( like me)

Hello Salamonson,
And Welcome to RootsChat. :D
Thanks for linking to us, and we look forward to chatting to you and your country-men on RootsChat.

Sorry if I'm being stupid but here goes. I already have a website which is on my NTL free webspace. Could I have it on Rootschat and on my NTL pages? Told you it was stupid.
Jenny :P
-
Jenny,
You could copy it across without too much bother.
-
I'd love to be able to put all the info I have collected somewhere but wouldn't know how to begin. It's all on computor already but I really don't have a clue as to how anything could be transferred.
Thank you from one idiot too many probably!
-
Hi all,
Firstly, yes.
Secondly, it is not that hard to create a simple web page from a family tree - there are lots of free packages available that do this for you. Then all you need to learn is how to transfer the files.
Actually, this also depends on the site you are contacting with your uploads of files, and I would say this site is good - suits me.
I, like many others, am happy to offer assistance (to a degree) and for free to people who wish to have a go. You have nothing to lose, and a lot to gain from taking ownership of your iwn work - yes, teacher-speak (no I am not a teacher).
I am excited about the prospect of having a fast site that allows uploads to their server, and available for everyone.
I will stop waffling now, but believe me that this is an excellent idea; and on an excellent site.
Best

I am keen to copy my website (or at least bits of it) across to Rootschat. I have considered using Rootsweb but gee the ads and popups get me down. And this is one excellent site!!! Go Linux. ::)
-
would love to but like others have said would need an idiots guide. words of one sylable and a spelling guide!!!

Well what I think we can offer is on two tiers:
The first tier is like a framework where the layout is quite fixed, but you can add as many pages as you like within the framework. An example of this is what Chris 1066 has been testing for us.
An example: http://www.RootsChat.com/history/hastings/
(the colours and the menu items you can change by the way)
The second tier is where we simply give you an username and password to "upload" your webspace, then you can do your own thing.
Also, we might also offer something in between the two which is a more sophisticated (but more complicated) system called Mambo which allows you to manage your own pages.
Whichever one you choose, it will be free, and on an incredibly quick webserver (with no popups either!)
-
I too would be interested. I have had a website 'in the future' for a long time now - I too would need an 'Idiots Guide'!!!

Hi
We have 20 years of research on both our families. I would love to put them one a website of our own, but don't know how. I did try one on tribalpages as they did the work on setting it up.
Would need help but would prefer to do one with Rootschat. We might then be able to correct some of the incorrect info, placed by others on the web, re families.
Do you realise that you would end up with world wide genealogies.
Hope to see it.

Hello.
I'd love to be able to start up a Family web-page/site. I also would need my hand holding. I can't even find a valid BUNDY family crest. ???

got any further with this Tristan?
I'm itching to start lol

Fitty,
When we've moved the whole of RootsChat onto the new server then I can set you loose on it !
Trystan :)
-
Wheeeeeee!! ;D
-
Hi,
Would mysql & php be an option?
-
We will be able to install PHP/MySQL Packages for people, or offer FTP access for people - but not generally both to the same person (incase you crash our server)
If you have a particular requirement though then I'm sure we can accomodate it.
-
Another dummy here. I would love to give this a go.I have my Tree on Paf 5 on my PC. will I be able to take it from there.
Its great to read that so many people out there willing to help. What a great bunch you are.
-
Hiya June,
I have used PAF 5 in the past and my webpages that I am amending where created by PAF. They are okay. At least it's a good starting place.
There is an option to create webpages on maybe th ereports option? Just play about with it - you won't break anything ;D
I bought a book on HTML and started to amend bits of code but it isn't really necerssary.
Pam

Yes Please can I have 2? Id like to move my Wills site somewhere it will get afr better coverage and another Id like to have offering professional services because hey im a researcher lol. I dont know about other professionals but I am sure we would ( those of us using your pages for advertising) be willing to contribute to the running of the site be it through having banners on the pages or placing your ads there with your affiliate details :)
Also for any of those 30+% there are many free tutorials available also a few What You See Is What You Get programs that allow you to build a site and not know any HTML and trust me you will in time figure it out. Its how I started. Please dont ask me Im no Expert on web design.
rob
-
Rob,
Yes you can have two for asking so nicely ! :)
As professional genealogists you will also benefit by being indexed by Google off the back of RootsChat too, which will increase your exposure.
Trystan
-
awwwwwwwww Trystan your such a gent now I know why your better half is just that lol.
Seriously though this is an amazing offer you both have made to us all and one I am sure very few others would have offered so thank you.

Like kevan, I'd be interested in offering whatever help I can to anyone who needs in in regards to getting their site made although I must add here that all my coding is by hand in raw HTML, XHTML, CSS, CGI and ASP.
I guess we might regret this at some time ;D
My only question would be what about ASP and CGI - would they be available for use?
I think this is an excellent idea btw!
-
Love to have a web page here but would need some guidance to do it.

I think this is a brilliant offer and thank you for offering :)
Fluffnco (aka A Wallwork)

Free Webspace on RootsChat is HERE
OK, for those who fancy uploading pages to free webspace, then RootsChat is now delighted to offer it. It's totally free of charge, free of pop-ups, and it's yours for the asking.
THIS IS "PART ONE" OF WHAT ROOTSCHAT CAN OFFER YOU FOR YOUR OWN WEBSITE.
Just send a personal message to me (trystan), with your requested password, and we will set up your webspace. (if you want a particualr address for your wespace, for example "YORKFHS" or whatever then we can do that too - first come, first served) All you will receive back is "FTP" details that you will need to upload your website. If you don't have the foggiest what I mean then don't worry - in the coming weeks we are bringing out some other goodies for you (see below).
Your website will then be: (whatever your username is)
www.rootschat.com/~username
Your free webspace is available if you have two stars or more, and the site is related to family history, local history, or related in interest to these. Your webspace will be pop-up free, but we do reserve the right to include an advert block to your site to cover our costs. What do we ask in returm? All that we ask is that you make mention of RootsChat on your site for us.
PART TWO: In the coming weeks we are also bringng you a really easy package for you to build your own website (RootsChatEasy) using no software at all - just build it using your web-browser online. As with everything on RootsChat, it will also be free.
PART THREE: We will also be providing a very exciting online family tree websites for RootsChatters too, with the ability to find links to other users trees. And again, this will be free too.
-
How many stars do I have?
-
You have two - so you're ok!
-
???
I can see by the comments of others, that I`m not the only dimwit when it comes to these things, I`m not quite sure what exactly this means, would it be for entering say, my own family tree or what? or results of my searching etc etc, would other people be able to contact me through the web site, and if so how?
As you have probably guessed,I AM a dimwit, I`m still trying to work out what things mean in the "Idiots Guide to XP"
I need anything to do with computers explained a lot, just not technically minded you see!!! after all, in my day, when I was a worker, when electric typwriters came in, that was a marvel, then I learned to use a teleprinter (now called I believe telex?) but you should have seen my wee face trying to work out the marvels of the now common FAX machine, of coure it was not called that then, but the full technical word!!
The computers were already being installed the year before I retired, and I used to think my boss (the chairwoman) must be daft if she thought files could be kept in the computer!!! what would happen to all my filing cabinets and the mountains of paper accumulated therein, you see, I`m still in the stone age yet!!!
But, I was there when Xerox started up the "modern" photo copy machines, why I even went on a training course, and wonder of wonders, received a certificate!!!
no one in the office (in those early days) was allowed to put in paper etc etc, unless they had a "certificate"!!!
Ta Ta, thats me lot for today, have used up me energy quota
-
I would like to add my web site but....is it difficult to do?
-
I would love my own site as I have been researching local and family history since 1977.
How do I start? Asked this the other night in the common room chat but all I was told was look out for something in the beginners bit. Could someone in the know drop all of us computer idiots a line to say "look at this site and do what it says" and send us off to a little quiet place by the sea to learn all the basics?
When I say "a little quiet place by the sea" I mean "virtually"!!!!!!!!
Thanks for a great site.
By the way, I have tried to add a picture on the mug shots page but the browse bit isn't there, it is here, but not there! Any ideas??

I'd be interested in connecting a webpage of genealogy to this site.

For those of you who would like free webspace to set up your own website, then RootsChat is now able to provide the space for you. ;D
See: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=13130.0
(this link is only viewable by logged-in users by the way) ;)
PS This is only for webspace, so if you don't have a website to 'upload' then it may be best to wait for us to set up the "RootsChatEasy" site for you. :)
Trystan

Eight people have "signed up" today for free RootsChat webspace, so best of luck with it!
-
Very interested in having a Website on Rootschat.
I'm putting a site together at present using Frontpage, but am going on a Dreamweaver course soon which hopefully will make life a bit easier!!!

:) :) :) :)
What about an alphabetical list of Rootschatters Free Webpages ?
Not only would they be great to read, they would also encourage others to set theirs up.
:) :) :) :)
-
There is a list here, from JonathanW, but it's not alphabetically sorted:
List of RootsChat Websites: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,23896.0.html
Maybe we can ask Jonathan (nicely) if he would sort them alphabetically ....... according to RootsChat User-Name ??
-
:) :) :)
Thanks Bob,
I didn't realise there was a list - yes perhaps we could ask Jonathan (nicely) !!
:D :D :D

I'm in.

I'm at that stage where I haven't a clue what I'm doing, only been at this genealogy for a couple of months and still don't know what's what. For instance, I keep seeing 'Gedcom Files' errrrrrr, what's a Gedcom file and how do you do one??
Would the 'start up a web page' site have a tutorial on how a dummy could learn about it all??
Barbara
-
Hi Barbara,
what's a Gedcom file and how do you do one??
here's a short explanation:
Topic: Tutorial: Step-by-Step Guide to building your website
4 b) Programs for creating webpages from GEDCOM files:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,93490.msg397241.html#msg397241
Would the 'start up a web page' site have a tutorial on how a dummy could learn about it all??
Not on the webpage itself, but on RootsChat:
Topic: TUTORIAL: Step-by-Step Guide to building your website
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,93490.0.html
and
Topic: TOPICS: Help with building your website.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,70811.0.html
and
in general, the whole of the "free RootsChat webspace" board.
The tutorial is interactive in the sense that if your questions aren't answered there, you start a new topic, and the information will be added (in time) to the tutorial
Have a browse, and a think (lots of thinks !), and ask again (and again !).
Plenty of willing helpers here.
Bob
-
Thanks Bob, I had a look and I think I understand it, but for Gawds sake don't ask me any questions about it yet!! I'll have to go back to it a couple of times before it sinks in. So If I get it right, I need one of those programmes to put all the information in and it will automatically become a GEDCOM file? Is that right?? Or have I got it all backaswards? I did warn you I was a complete dummy at this.
Regards
Barbara ::)
-
Hi Barbara,
it doesn't "automatically" become a GEDCOM file, but most family history programs have the facility to create GEDCOMs from the data you enter, and to read other GEDCOMs and add them to your data.
Bob
-
:o :o And you need to ask. ;D ;D
Yes please.
-
Please add me to the list wanting a website. I would definitely be interested in the free-space option.
One question: would it be permissible to include web-tracking software on one's own pages?
Regards
John
-
John,
Just click on the link Free RootsChat Webspace (http://www.rootschat.net/cgi-bin/register.cgi) at the very bottom of the page to sign up. You are free to use tracking links as long as they do not adverts/links for other sites.
Trystan

I had started my webpage the other day and now I cannot find the editing page. When I get into your website I get the forum and cannot locate the page editor.
Another dummy here :)
