Thank you Falkyrn, that narrows down the search  :)

Does the fact that the fathers profession is given as "soldier" mean that this was his full time occupation?

Renfrewshire / Trying to acertain role in army from "private soldier _____ foot"?
« on: Friday 20 September 19 11:56 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out more about John Findlay/Finlay, from his son's 1801 baptism and 1865 death records.

The death records state that "____ Findlay/Finlay" was a "private soldier _____ foot"?

The death certificate does not state the father as deceased. As he would have been at least could this have been an oversight?

The mother is listed as Margaret Finlay m.s. Russell although I cannot find any evidence that Margaret Russell married John Findlay.

Could anyone suggest what John Findlay's military role could have been?

Many thanks

Thanks for your interest. Yes, if that kind of information is available it would be a great help  :)

Renfrewshire / Process for illegitimate birth recorded at baptism around 1800 in Mearns
« on: Monday 16 September 19 10:52 BST (UK)  »
On the baptism record for John Findlay born Mearns 1800, his mother is Margaret Russell and his father is John Findlay. The record states that he is illegitimate.

Can anyone elaborate on the process of recording illegitmate births at that time and where I may be able to find further records, eg where father's of illegitimate children were officially acknowledged?

I am trying to identify the birthplace of John Findlay "illegitimate son to John Findlay and Margaret Russell" in 1800.

I am reading it as Laurencedod, any suggestions?

Forfarian I think you are on to something with Quadeby as it is right next to Bankhead which is where one of the witnesses (at Mary Findlay's baptism) comes from.
