Ayrshire / Singing Competition in Catrine
« on: Monday 20 January 14 14:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone I have a gold medal won by my greatGmother, Margaret Paterson on the 2nd June1905 for winning a Singing competition held at Catrine. I am  assuming that Catrine is in Sorn, Ayrshire.
Margaret Paterson was born in Lanarkshire so I'm assuming that she travelled to Catrine to take part in this competition.
The medal is inscribed- Catrine, Singing Competition,1st Sophrano Prize, won by Margaret Paterson,2nd Jan.1905.
So, does anyone know of such a competition being held in the Ayrshire town of Catrine or is it another Catrine somewhere else in Scotland ? Please help Thanks

PS Did the engraver misspell Soprano or is it an earlier spelling?

Hi House2000 I would be interested in any news of identities of pupils. I have ancestors who lived and owned Kipperoch and Old Kipperoch which lay on Kipperoch Road which ran down into Cardross joining Cardross to the  Vale of Leven.
I hope you get help and have a successful search
Regards and best wishes

Hi Dotty, Elizabeth Allan of Faulds and her daughters are Allans. The word Faulds is a district in Cumbernauld,Dunbarton, Scotland and not a Surname. I hope this helps your search.

Ayrshire / Re: ROBB in Ayr

Hi Michelle 72
The 1901 Census has Alexander Robb married to Clara born in England. They have a son John aged 21 which means his YOB 1880. John is a tailor. There are two other children Alice 17 and George who is 12. All these children were born before Clara's second marriage.
In 1901, Clara was 42.so it would be unlikely that she had any more children, but I have not checked the 1911 census on SP I've run out of credits. Sorry does this help?

Hi The Robbs in my family tree have connections to Ayrshire and the name Allardyce. Allardyces were a family of mainly coal miners who lived in Ayrshire with large parts of that family emigrating to the USA. I'm unaware that any moved to Australia but that means nothing.
Good luck with your searches. Keep looking on this site I must say that it has been very helpfull with some of my brickwalls which had remained for years.
Best wishes,
Are.

Lanarkshire / Re: How were tenement buildings numbered in Glasgow?
« on: Friday 12 October 12 20:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi odds one side evens the other and 8 two room apartments at each address, but each apartment had their family name on the door. These were as I said two roomed. However, in the 1960 some of the more grandiose tenements with several rooms  were split into single rooms with many families living in one room so you could have a large number of families living at the one address. My experience is of Townhead in Glasgow in the 1960s
