Ayrshire / John Douglass and Jannet McMichael Family
« on: Saturday 14 October 06 15:24 BST (UK)  »
John Douglass (1777-1839), my 3Ggrandfather, married Jannet McMichael (1782-1858 New Cumnock). They lived at Bowgang (Bougang) farm near Colmonell for years and that is where  most of their children (John, Robert, Daniel, William, Mary, James, Janet, and Isabella) were born. Robert raised a monument (in the kirkyard at Colmonell) that provides some information about the family, but I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who could help me find out more.

Their first son, John (my GGgrandfather), married Margaret Lowrie at Colmonell in 1839, was living in Barr in the 1841 census and emigrated to Canada about 1850. I believe that all of the other children remained in Ayrshire. Thanks!

Canada / John Douglas Family from Scotland to Canada
« on: Saturday 08 October 05 17:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi, Folks,

I'm trying to get my gggrandfather's family from Barr, Ayrshire, Scotland to Canada. Here's what I have so far:

John Douglas(s) b. <1800> Ayrshire
Margaret Laury/Lowrie/Lowry (?) b. <1810> Ayrshire
Married 1839 in Colmonell, Ayrshire
Elizabeth b. <1840> Barr, Ayrshire
John b. <1842> Barr, Ayrshire
Janet b. <1845> Barr, Ayrshire

In the 1841 census of Scotland John, Margaret, and Elizabeth are in Barr village, Ayrshire.

In 1861 they are in Horton Twp, Ontario. with three more children, two of whom were, I believe, born in Bristol, Quebec. They are Isabella b. <1851> Bristol, Que.,  Margaret b.<1852> Bristol, Que., and William b. <1855> Ontario. They eventually have two additional children, Mary and Donal, born in Ontario. Census entries in Canada give an immigration date of 1850 while other data pushes it back to 1848 or 1849.

Thus far I have been unable to locate them in the 1851 Canadian census, Ontario or Quebec.

Questions: Was it usual for immigrants to arrive in Montreal or  Quebec, settle in for a few years and then cross the Ottawa in to Ontario? Is there any way of finding out when and where they arrived?

Any information and/or ideas would be most welcome. Thanks, Larry

Arranroots,

Thank you for the Douglas family information from the 1841 census of Barr. This is the first "find" of my gggrandparents in Scotland. Hurrah! Larry

Ayrshire / 1841 Census of Barr for Douglass
« on: Saturday 01 October 05 15:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I'm trying to locate my Douglas line in Ayrshire. John Douglass (b 1800) and Margaret Lowrie/Lowry? (b 1810) were married in Colmonell in 1839. Their first child, Elizabeth, was born in Barr Nov 1840. Two more children were born in Barr (John 1842) and Janet (1845) before the family emigrated to Canada (settled first in Quebec and then Ontario) in the late 1840s or early 1850s.

I would greatly appreciate a look up. Thanks. Larry
