Sorry this is very belated but I have just been updating my McOnie line and discovered your message!  Interestingly I have just linked Jane Ann Tough to Donald Meldrum McOnie, married Sunderland March qtr 1910.  Donald M did have brother James who married Williamina (or Wilhelmina) Manson, Leith South 1897. Also a son James born Sunderland 1912.  However quite a few James among my McOnies!

Do you know who your James McOnie's parents were?  I will see if I can link him in.

Hi Julie, good to hear from you again.  Just one more reply and you will have your third post!

Also good to hear from you Thomas.  Sorry I missed your post last month.  You need two more posts and we can then private message.

I am not a relative.  My father and your uncle Thomas were at school together, both in 1st and 2nd 15 rugby teams.  Your uncle was a top boxer as you probably know and Dad kept newspaper cuttings of some of his fights, which is how I came to know about him.

I had an opportunity to visit Thomas Campbell McGillivray's grave in northern France a few years ago while I was doing a remembrance trip for some of my own relatives and had an interesting experience that I can share with you.

Regards

Bob

Hullo again Julie.
RootsChat Personal Message function only works after a member has done three posts, so as Minniehaha indicated you will need to put up another two posts before I can PM you.  Just one word or a smiley in each post will do it :)

Hi Jeanne
Sorry this is a bit late in the piece, I don't check in very often and just noticed your post.  Hope by now you have James' service record.
If you are interested, I have a couple of photos with James in them.  He was in the same unit as my father, 4th RMT, and they would have been together in Egypt and on Crete.
You are right, he was one of the lucky ones - one of the photos mentioned is a group of eight taken at Alexandria.  Four didn't come home, three were POW and one (my father) returned wounded.
I also have a small POW group photo taken at Stalag 8B Lamsdorf that was sent to my Dad by one of his RMT mates, also from Oamaru.  Possibly he and James were in the same camp.  I will scan and enlarge the photo and see if I can spot him.
Regards
Bob
