Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Re: Marriage Registers 1895 of Huddersfield
« on: Saturday 25 September 10 18:11 BST (UK) »William Cotton was an agricultural labourer as his father in census details below.
In 1872 there was a revolt of agricultural labourers. I believe this is the reason that William Cotton moved North, if he was a member of the trade union he would have been blacklisted.
Rex Russell's 1956 book on Agricultural Trade Unions in the 19th century
"The Revolt of the Field in Lincs.", gives evidence of union meetings and
disturbances culled from the newspaper "The Lincoln, Rutland and Stamford
Herald"
What the farm labourers were fighting for in 1872 was a 9 hour working day
(not including lunch - ie. 7am - 5pm) and an increase in rates of pay from
2s 3d per day (about 12p) to 3s per day (15p).
Report of the 1867 Royal
Commission on the Employment of Children, Young Persons and Women in
Agriculture, which found widespread evidence of child labour, which forced
down the wages of the labourers, plus other evidence of inadequate cottage
building, interference in education, etc.
A list of Lincolnshire farmers signed a resolution
not to employ any labourer who was a member of a Union, on 11th March
1874.
