Armagh / Re: Murphy & Stevenson, Lurgan
« on: Monday 18 October 10 14:10 BST (UK)  »
I have and found nothing.  I have searched manifest, too.  I actually found Rosanna's brother, Jno, coming to NY before Ellis Island was open.  I only know of him because he is living with her in the 1880 census.  No one in the family ever spoke of him.  He died before 1910.  He was also an iron moulder and lists his birth as Scotland but both parents are born in Ireland.  Even the census taker was confused since Jno is Stevenson and at that point Rosanna is Murphy.  Their relationship was not listed on the census.  He did marry and move on so Rosanna stayed and raised her son by herself.  She died in 1911. Both Richard and Rosanna were buried in a cemetery that was moved in the 1940's.  By all accounts dishonest people were involved and no one knows exactly where they were re-interred in an existing cemetery or if they were.  I found records at the Historical Society since Richard Murphy did not live long enough to be on a census.  He was a stevedore and I was told he died in an accident when his son was a year old.  His death certificate has him born around 1936 since he was 40 when he died.  I, too, question the part about the mine and think it would have to be in another country.  An older cousin recently told me that but didn't know too much about it.  I think I found Rosanna and Jno living in Scotland in the 1861 and 1871 census.  Their parents were born in Ireland.  I am not quite sure since her father's name differs from the one on her death certificate.

I don't have a marriage date but I think it is after 1871.  By 1875 they were living in Philadelphia and had a son.  Richard died a year later.  I also think Rosanna may have been raised in Scotland and Richard in Ireland so I am not sure how they got together.  I assume they were married before they left for the USA via Canada.  I have lots of family stories about them coming from Northern Ireland.  There is also one that says one of their families had a diamond mine.  Rosanna is also hard to trace because sometimes she is Rose and I have also found her as Ruth.  I am named for her so I do know she is Rosanna.  Murphy is also a hard name to trace since there are so many.  I have searched for a long time but really cannot find anything on them except starting in 1880 in the US federal census.  I talked to someone recently and may try contacting churches in Philadelphia.  I believe they would have belonged to a Protestant church since they were not Catholic.

Antrim / Stevenson sailed from Larne

Looking for information on the Jno Stevenson family.  Jno Stevenson sailed from Larne and arrived in the USA on the 28th of November in 1879 at the age of 24.  His occupation was a moulder.  Would like to know his parents and siblings.  I believe his father may also be John and his mother Rosanna and at least one sister named Rosanna who immigrated to Canada and the USA around 1870.  I am unable to find birth records for anyone in the family.  Rosanna Stevenson is my g-grandmother.  The family may be from Armagh or Antrim with ties to Scotland
Thank you.

Armagh / Murphy & Stevenson, Lurgan
« on: Thursday 15 July 10 14:02 BST (UK)  »
I have found a listing in the  Belfast and Ulster Towns Directory for 1910  for Murphy & Stevenson, manufacturers on High Street.  I believe my g-grandparents came from Lurgan.  His name is Richard Murphy born about 1836 and her name is Rosanna Stevenson born about 1850.  The Murphy & Stevenson business may be their families. I only know that they emigrated in the 1860's through Canada and eventually settled in Philadelphia, PA, USA.  I know at least one of them but possibly both were not Roman Catholic.  I am looking for information regarding their parents and siblings.  Rosanna Stevenson Murphy died on 12/31/1911 in Philadelphia and her death certificate says her parents are John and Rosanna Stevenson.  Richard died in Philadelphia on 7/08/1876 leaving Rosanna a widow who raised their only child, Edward Murphy.  No parents are listed on his death certificate.  I would also like any informatin regarding the Murphy & Stevenson business. Thank you.

Galway / Re: Durrow, Galway - Mannions - Catholic church

Shane,
Thank you so much for all your help.  I now see why I couldn't find the RC church.  My other grandmother was from Mayo and I had no trouble finding her parish church and someone actually has a PDF of the church records that were copied by the LDS on line which was a tremendous help.

I have a Margaret Quinenan(sometimes Queenan) who married Patrick Coen in my family tree.  Margaret is in the 1901 Irish census married to Patrick Coen and living in Finisklin, County Sligo.   From her age in the census record, she was born around 1855.   Her sons, Patrick and Bartholomew, and daughter, Delia, came to Philadelphia.  I also live in Philadelphia.  I have been told Margaret had a bother, Martin, who lived in New Jersey.

Galway / Durrow, Galway - Mannions - Catholic church

I cannot find the name of the Catholic Church in Townland: Durrow (Civil Parish: Drumatemple;Barony:Ballymoe, Galway).  I have located ancestors living here in the 1911 census and believe my g-grandparents who moved onto Cashelmehan in Roscommon are from Durrow.  I would like to contact the Catholic church in Durrow for records of baptism.  I would appreciate it if someone could give me the name of the local Catholic church in Durrow.  Thank you.
