Hi Annie,

Maxwelltown is an area of Dundee, around the Hilltown.  Ann Street is in that area.

You will find Ann Street on www.multimap.com

Hi Dave,

Not sure if you will know of this already, but the name Cornelius Fortune caught my attention.

On the Longforgan War Memorial there is one Cornelius Fortune Thomson Boyd, died 1917.  Cornelius was in NZ and died during WW1. whilst serving in the NZ Expeditionary Force?  The circumstances of his death are unknown.

Cornelius FTB was the son of David Milne Boyd, Writer and Jessie Blaikie Thomson.  He was born November 26th 1891, 56 Dundee Street, Edinburgh.

David Milne (son of Peter Milne, Miller and Jessie Milne was born 28June/23rd July 1848, Liff Benvie and Iinvergowrie, Angus) married Jessie Blaikie Thomson (daughter of Alexander Thomson and Janet Richie) December 14th 1871, Northgate, Peebles.  One of the witnesses was Cornelius Fortune Thomson.

I don't know when Jessie Thomson died, but David Milne then married Margaret Watt.  He was living in Longforgan where he died and was Inspector of Poor and Registrar.

I don't have any connection to this family, but merely an interest in the War Memorial.

It is such an unusual name, I thought this bit of information might interest you.

Regards,
Dorothy

HI Gordon,   a few answers which might help you.

Would Scouring Burn be correct ?
Yes.  Scouring Burn was an area going West out of Dundee. You could possibly find it on an old map.

http://www.old-maps.co.uk/

Was this address at King St a Hospital ? can't find any information.
No, its a street going North East out of Dundee.

How would I find out if she was buried and where ?
You could contact Dundee City Council, giving date of death and ask them to check for you.  Not sure if there is a charge for this.
parks.burials[at]dundeecity.gov.uk

How would I find out if there was a death notice ?
You could email  The Courier, Dundee, asking them if they could help you.  But I am not sure if there were many death notices in those days.  Lack of money I would expect.

Alexander died at 14 Murraygate in Dundee.
This is also a street.   Still there in the centre of Dundee.
Can I ask the same questions for him.

If you go to www.dundeecity.gov.uk - local history, and to Photopolis, you will find photographs of old Dundee.  Might give you an insight as to what it used to look like.   Youy mention the Overgate.  This has all but gone and now has a shopping centre built there.  You will get a photograph of this in Photopolis somewhere.

Hi Boop,

Here's some information on Dundee Jail which might be of interest to you.  Its not going to help you find records and if NAS don't have them, then I am not sure where you could try.  Perhaps the Archivist in Dundee might be able to give you some information.

Hi Jill,  not sure what else you are looking for, but
Longforgan is included.  Try the drop down menu for "all counties" or the "Angus" drop down menu.

Hi Monica and Jericho,

Just wondering if that John Dewar could be Sophia's father.  The occupation showing Tailor coincides with son John's occupation.  Forgot to put in that John Dewar (father) was born Foss in Perthshire.

Also if he was a soldier, that would account for the children being born "all over the place"!  I'll check the Howff film after Christmas and see if it says anything else.   The Index is not complete.

On Agnes Stewart Prain's 1855 birth certificate, it shows Sophia's birth place as Perth.  Jericho, if you don't have a copy, pm me with your email address and I'll send it to you.

Think that's about the lot for just now.  Bye,

Dorothy
