Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 1851 Census place name
« on: Saturday 28 September 19 18:13 BST (UK)  »
Hello
On the 1851 census Mary Davies, wife of Thomas Davies, is in Scotswood, Newcastle-upon-Tyne with their children Phoebe, Richard, Jane and Ann. Mary's place of birth is what I am struggling with. She died in 1854 so this is the only record of her birth place I can find and it is, to me at least, indecipherable. Thomas's birth place is given as Montgomery which together with the surname Davies suggests Montgomery, Wales. Phoebe was born in Sandbach, Cheshire which is near the Welsh border. So far so good.
Complications set in with the 1861 census which finds Thomas still in Newcastle with a new wife but with birth place recorded as Scotland. Newcastle of course is not far from the Scottish border.
Mary's birth place looks as though it begins Carr__ and possibly ending with ___tree and has a second word that at a pinch could be a squashed up Montgomery. Nothing fits that name in the Montgomery, Wales area.
Can anyone shed any light on this?

Europe / Re: Gunnar Aadnesen born Lillesand, Norway 1881
« on: Wednesday 01 April 15 18:21 BST (UK)  »
Thanks for this site. The two hits seem to be reviews of the book which must have been published in 1954 in Norway (the English translation was published in 1957). I think he may have been in Santos in 1954 and could well have died there in which case I will need to investigate the South American end.

Europe / Gunnar Aadnesen born Lillesand, Norway 1881
« on: Wednesday 01 April 15 17:32 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find information about Gunnar Aadnesen who spent a lot of his life travelling through South America and who wrote a book ("Green Light For Adventure" originally published in Norwegian as "Gront Lys For Eventyret") about his travels. He died in the 1950s/60s probably in Norway but can anyone confirm that? He is recorded in the 1885 Norway census and crops up in emigration records.
Is there a digital archive of Norwegian newspapers that could be searched online for articles or an obituary? Maybe there are forums in Norway that would help with my search? I would have thought a character like this must have left a digital footprint but virtually nothing comes up in search engines.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / Re: James Everett b. Normanton c.1854

One other clue is that in 1911 they were described as having had two children so one must have died between censuses. As they moved around a lot this is not much help.
The Shrewsbury p.o.b. for Ellen is a transcription mistake. All the p.o.b.s in the list need to move down one line.

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / James Everett b. Normanton c.1854

Having  a lot of difficulty finding the birth and parents/siblings of James Everett who according to the 1911 census when he was living in Barnsley,Yorkshire was born in Normanton Derbyshire. In 1911 he described himself as a labourer aged 58 and married to Sarah Ann for 20 years, aged 48 b.Staleybridge, Lancs. Also present was their daughter Ellen aged 11 b. Heckmondwike, Yorkshire in 1900.
They were also in Barnsley for the 1901 census but their places of birth seem to have been transposed by one line. If so his p.o.b. is given as Derby and he was a stone quarry labourer aged 53.
Despite months of looking I have found no record of a birth for any of them nor a marriage. The Family hearsay is that Ellen never had a birth certificate. They seemed to travel around a lot and a few months after her birth in Heckmondwike they were in lodgings in Barnsley so perhaps she wasn't registered.
If the 1911 census is to be believed they were married around 1891 but no luck anywhere. The surname is variously spelled Everett, Everitt, Everatt and variations of those. They would have been in their 30s by that time so maybe they were previously married?
Can anybody help find James in Normanton in the 1850s?

In a nutshell that is the theory I am testing. Assuming that the 1901/1911 censuses are correct and Normanton, Derbyshire is where James Everitt/Everett was born, and it is a big assumption since I have found no births registered in the 1850s for that area, so far the only Everitts around in the Normanton area have originated in Essex. Tracing those back leads to William from Little Bentley. As he doesn't seem to have a son called James maybe his brothers did. Something prompted the Everitts to migrate to Derbyshire, perhaps the railways, so maybe William's brothers blazed an early trail.
Many thanks for helping out. :)

I have been offline for a while and hadn't realised how busy you have been!
If there is a link between this family and my James Everett b. 185?Normanton,Derbsyhire then John Everitt baptised 14/5/1826 is the only possibility. Can we found out what happened to him? Did he marry and end up in Derbyshire in the 1850s? Here's hoping!

Quote
William Clark Everitt 21/4/1822 at little Bentley Essex, to hezekiah (blacksmith and later, farmer) and Mary.
Siblings: Eliza 21/3/1824
John 14/5/1826
Didn't find any others.
