The Common Room / Re: Family Tree has tapered off!
« on: Sunday 05 January 20 17:47 GMT (UK)  »
I'm having a break at the moment.  Since finding a marriage in 1699, I've not been able to push back my direct blood line beyond that date.  It's very frustrating.  The only thing I can think of is contacting the TNA about hearth tax redemption certificates to see if they shed any light on my ag lab ancestors.  The parish records seem to remain stubbornly silent. :(

On the other hand, I've suddenly found a marriage for my great aunt in Canada in 1930.  I know she worked there in the early 1900s, but thought she'd returned to the UK by 1923.  So every cloud.... :)

On The National Archives website there is an entry for a soldier who may be him.

James Taugh, alias Tough born Kildrony, Aberdeenshire, served in the 79th regiment...discharged aged 49...

He seemed to serve from 1800 - 1814.

I think you can find further details on Findmypast or Ancestry.  Good luck.

I've enjoyed all the WDYTYA episodes.  But I'd be really pleased if they did Aidan Turner's next... :P :P :P

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Puzzling DNA results..
« on: Sunday 11 August 19 16:43 BST (UK)  »
So, Ian has inherited more English DNA from his mother, than the Scottish members of his family.  I've always thought doing a DNA test wouldn't reveal much more than I already know about my tree (being boring English on both sides of the family), so I've never gone ahead with it.  But it would reveal which genes I had inherited from my parents/grandparents.  If a sibling underwent the same test, presumably it would reveal a different set of genes.

I'm a bit confused.  What happened to Israel's family?  Did they manage to escape Latvia and get to England?  Or did he have to leave them behind?

Yes, I know where he is in the censuses (Bethnal Green), but not when he died.  He was living in Bethnal Green when his wife died in 1874, as the address is recorded on her death certificate, but nothing on his death certificate 6 years later, just details about the inquest.

Thank you very much for this, Stan... :)

I was hoping that it would give more information about him, such as where he was living at the time, but it seems not to be.

London and Middlesex / Inquest into death of William Stokes 3rd Feb 1880
« on: Sunday 07 January 18 15:35 GMT (UK)  »
This rellie of mine died quite tragically on the railway line at Hendon on 1st February 1880.  His death certificate records that there was an inquest on the 3rd.  Anybody know where the coroner's report might be held, if it survives?
