Wexford / Re: Ryder family in New Ross
« on: Friday 04 June 10 17:46 BST (UK)  »
As a small boy  I met  Sadie Ryder who was a good friend of my late aunt Lily Stewart of New Ross.
Sadie married George Tyrrell who was a master mariner, no doubt one of the well known Arklow shipping  family.

Eugene,
Can you  please indicate the source of your information concerning the date of April ,1914 ?
I had assumed he died in 1918/19 only on the base of family lore that the cause of death was the Black 'flu.

Eugene,
Good of you to ask about Sam Russell.
Yes ,we found him in the  1901 or 1911 census born ca 1874 in Larne. Married Agnes Mc Alpin on 21 March 1906 in Larne. Sam was a fireman & then engine driver. Died from the black 'flu in Cape Town while visiting his elder brother Jimmy, engine driver & later stationmaster at Simonstown,Cape Province.( My grandfather) Sam was a bit of a lad.He abandoned his wife on the grounds that he was drunk when he agreed to marry her.
Best regards,
Jack

Scotland / Re: Robert Russell 1851 census look-up

Hello Ambly,
Yes,  Richard Espie married (my great aunt) Harriet Russell but this was much later ( in 1908.) "Spin "as an name appears very unlikely and I cannot see any family connection where names used were very traditional.
Jack :) :) :)

Many thanks for your helpful (and speedy )reply. Apart from the county ,it all fits very nicely . I double checked on the IGI website where five of the nine children of James Russell and Margaret White were born or christened in Larne,Co Antrim.
Best regards
Jack :D :D :D

Antrim Completed Look up Requests / Re: what is the correct irish surname?
« on: Wednesday 02 April 08 13:57 BST (UK)  »
As no one has  yet answered Joekar's original question,I will attempt to reply as best I can. The Irish surname dating back to before the Norman invasion in the 11 th century ,would have been O'Brisleain,O'Breislein and more recently O'Breslin.Dr Mac Lysaght, an acknowledged authority on Irish family names refers to the name O'Breslin as inhabiting Donegal,Fermanagh and Sligo. A google search will yield further information but  please enter  "O'Breslin". :D

Antrim / Re: Magee family, Shankill Road 1870s onwards

Hello Liscoole ,
I was given most of the details from a  South African family member who about twenty years ago had been in contact with surviving Magees  on the spot in Northern Ireland. Unfortunately that family link no longer exists. The Mormon records only included three of the names concerned. :D

Hello Liscoole,
I am also researching  a Magee family with Shankill connections but probably not the Magees that interest you. My g grandfather John Magee  , born 18 th July 1841 in Carrickfergus ,married Susan Jennings a weaver, born around 1850 and who lived at the date of marriage in Leopold St,Shankill . Marriage took place on on 24 November 1875 at Holy Cross RC Church,Shankill.
John was a publican in Carrickfergus. They had nine children named Annie (my grandmother ) Patrick,Mary Elizabeth,Jack,Susan Josephine,William Henry,(died young)Rose Bernadine ,Dorothy and Hugh.
Annie emigrated to Cape Town  in December 1902 where she married  on arrival Jimmy Russell ,an engineer from Larne.
John's parents were Patrick Magee (farmer in Islandmagee ,Greenisland or Carrickfergus ) and Anna Graham. Susan's parents were William Jennings and Anna Kenny.
