A Google search for "Smugglers Cornwall" (without the quotes) found lots of interesting articles on the topic, with lists of names and places.

The word you are thinking of that means the same is probably "ejusdem"

FamilySearch has a helpful article at http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/RG/guide/WLLatin.asp

Which records - the Parish Registers or a transcript, or the IGI?  If it's the IGI then there are several unexplained instances of extracted batches containing only girls and not boys.
To be sure you need to check the actual registers.

Your man is on page 5 of the census.  On page 3 is Lt. Colonel Arthur Fyler, and on page 6 is (amongst others) Lt. Balfour Western.  Google tells us that both these officers were in the 50th Regiment of Foot (The Royal West Kent Regiment).

Devon / John HAWKER family 1700s
« on: Wednesday 12 September 07 14:20 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone identify this Hawker family for me?

John Hawker had two daughters, Mary and Elizabeth.

Mary Hawker married John David Ziegel at St.Thomas the Apostle, Exeter on 3 January 1746. They had two daughters, Mary who married Rev.Henry Mugg of Chudleigh, and Elizabeth who married Nicholas Phene of London, an Upholsterer. Mary (Hawker) Ziegel died in Chudleigh in 1811.

Elizabeth Hawker married Rev. Nicholas Cross at Ottery St.Mary on 18 March 1757. They settled in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, and Elizabeth died there in 1804.

John Hawker died in Trowbridge, Wilts. in 1780, but was not from there. He was described as a Gentleman, and left over £6000 in his will, shared between the families of his two daughters. From the information given above, I believe he was from Devon.

Any suggestions will be welcome.

Parloc, the Parish Locator program that can be downloaded free from http://www.parloc.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/ gives the distance between Hintlesham and Gestingthorpe as 17.1 miles.
