Is it on the back of the SWB If so they were all individually numbered and should marry up with the Silver War Badge Roll on ancestry

Edit...yes it is just looked....he is listed as will chas Adams depot KRRC enlisted 22 Nov 1915 discharged sickness in 1918
Badge number as you have it.

Ady

That's amazing.... aww Thank you.

Discharged due to Illness.....hmmmm wonder what that meant .... would that me ill from an injury? He didn't die till 1977! Does anyone know if I can find out this info?

KatieJJones, hey anyhelp is good help....... that would be great if you could.

The SWB was issued to soldiers who were discharged for either sickness or wounds, in this case you are lucky to have the info that it was sickness, it would seem he recovered but it was obviously too bad at the time for him to go back into service

You should be able to ascertain from the full medal rolls which battalion of the KRRC he went into, from there you should be able to trace where he was posted during the war ( if it's 13th battn I may be able to help) I do not know the WO reference for them but I'm sure with a little research you could find them

World War One / Re: 7th manchester regiment.Discharge!!

The 7th Battalion Manchester Regiment were a territorial force unit, much like the TA of today. Raised originally for home defense, at the outbreak of war they were asked to fight overseas. As part of the 42nd (East Lancs) division they were the first to go.

The 25th September 1914 (on the card) was the date they arrived in Egypt, they went on to fight in Gallipoli, Egypt again and then to France

The 7th Battalion had no connection to Liverpool in WW1

For their potted history have a look at this page on our main site

7th Battalion Manchester Regiment

we could look into Harry a little more but i can't guarantee what we will find

cheers

the helmet is facing forward, any detail of the badge has been 'burnt out' in the photo

Thank you for your very helpful reply, I wasn't aware the SDGW data base had errors in it and I will bear this in mind for the future.

SDGW isn't the problem it's Ancestry, any reference to  Antwerp or Aldershot should be queried

World War One / Re: Help with war service records

by the look of his records, he was in them all, he went over to France/Flanders after the end of 1915

so for some reason he had to leave his original regiment,  usually wounds and on recovery he was transferred to a different regiment .  he would have had no choice in this matter

if he was in the 7/8th Skins, that would have been after August 1917 when the 7th and 8th were amalgamated   (edit of course it was after then, the info was from the AVL ::))

during WW1 neither the other ranks of the Cheshire Regiment nor the MGC wore collar dogs

that photo has obviously been 'shopped' to improve it, we really could do with seeing the original in a high resolution scan to see if we can id those badges

sounds like he has had the 1914 star taken back ( correctly) and a 1914/1915 star re-issued

World War One / Re: Where was he between 1916 and 1918

if you look at the bottom of the document, there is a small table for calculating time in the army

country    from               to
home        11-5-18        10.9.18
france       11-9-18        23.10.18

I suspect he signed up in 1916 under the derby scheme which with his circumstances meant that he didn't actually get called up until 1918

ie, he was at home until 11-5-1918
