Hi Leila
If you are in contact with Bec, then please ask her for my contact details (if she still has them).
Otherwise ...(?)
I've nothing in JGL's own hand, but am happy to share copies of what I do have.

Hi Pels

Thanks for your responses. I am an in-law of the Fletchers and don't have direct access to the very little information that they have - a photo or two and what is already contained in these posts. I've a very poor knowledge of UK geography / towns, so it is a surprise to learn that there are 3 Birkbys in just Yorkshire.
Using the photos, and some jumbled oral history Bill must have been born roughly between 1900-1910, so that is not a huge help.
If the child you mentioned was born in 1946 in Leamington Spa, then we know who it is. Otherwise, the person has a brother living in Australia.

Warrant Officer in WW2, Royal Pioneer Corps; Married Edith Woodward, probably in Warwickshire during WW2; supposed to have been born in or around Birkby. Any information about his parents, date of birth, death, family would be greatly appreaciated by family in Australia.

Oh dear, you are not really from "the West?"  :o My dad's grandparents have strong Cornish heritage; my mum's grandparent's trace to Devon. Obviously somewhere along the line the smarter ones came out to Aus  ;D
Poor you!
And you have no Lander in your family tree! Even poorer you! Just shows you can't be a truly Cornish  ::)
(Now, if I can just locate my second head it can tell me how to convey a "roll over the floor laughing" message)
Thanks again for your information.

Thank you very much for the information that you have provided. I am amazed and delighted at the promptness of the response. Of course you've just given me yet another name to seek further information for: John Garrad LANDER.  :D

Now, I also must start searching for a Garrad / Garrard link.

As you are a Garrad, do you know of the link to Henry (and his sons? James and John) LANDER? Yes, that's a bit cheeky of me!

And regarding spelling, most of the  documents I have found with James' middle name spell it Garrard (except for a couple with Gerard/Gerrard!). I'm pretty sure I have something in his own handwriting and will have to go searching. It is definitely spelled with all three R's on his death certificate.

This site is brilliant.

What we know - he was a carpenter,  married to a Jane Eddy, had several children (incl Henry Garrard c 1827, Robert c 1833, Isabella c 1834, Sara Jane c 1835) married a Hannah Lamb in London and had three more children (John Lamb, James and Eliza) before emmigrating to South Australia. His father was Henry LANDER, mother's name not known. The family story is that he was Cornish and that most of the children were baptised in Cornwall.

Isabella and the children of Hannah Lamb all arrived in Australia.

Any help with James Garrard's birth, ancestors or children who (may have) remained in England would be welcome.

As information on these boards remains indefinitely, it is time to make another correction. There is a record that shows a "Cabolum Lea" arriving in South Aust on the ship mentioned, but looking at more original records I am now convinced that there was a transcription error: Cabolum has been mistakenly transcribed for Caroline!  ::) Oh well, hope this correction helps future searchers - and we have to look elsewhere for George's parents.

Isn't this fun!  ;D

I wrote above: "wife was Catherine nee Lemell as mentioned earlier." That should read "wife was Catherine nee PETERS."
Not sure why I wrote what I already new was suspect info but, as these records keep showing up in searches, thought I'd better correct myself.
Thanks to all those people who I've been in touch with and now know who I am - if you're part of this this tree and would like to be in touch, feel welcome.

Thank you for your efforts. The information on George and Caroline is consistent with information I have. And there is some comfort in finding that even more experienced family researchers cannot easily trace any records for Cabolum and Elizabeth. I will keep on trying.
