World War One / Re: What was a POW Company in WW1
« on: Wednesday 26 June 13 21:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi
A friend of mine has a matchbox holder that was made during WW1 and etched on it is '277 POW Comp' I know it doesn't stand for Prisoner of War but can anyone shine some light on what it does stand for.
many thanks
Leka

Are you sure it is not 277 Prisoner of War cAmp? Camp mis-spelt as Comp?

Just a thought, it existed in Devon.  Twenty four huts round a Recreation Ground.

Armed Forces / Re: What is a Stoker 1st class, Boiler Maker & Carpenters Crew?
« on: Saturday 07 January 12 01:24 GMT (UK)  »
Boilermaker was not a rank but a trade.  Some Engineroom Artificers ( Petty Officer and Chief Petty Officer) were Boilermakers.  In later years the title of  "Queens Boilermaker" was cherished.  There were also Coppersmiths, Enginesmiths, Fitters, Turners and an occasional Patternmaker.

Stokers did as described and much more in engine rooms and boiler rooms.  In later years "Stokers" became "Marine Engineering Mechanics"...a name change for recruiting purposes!

The quirks of Scottish Law are many, especially with Marriage!

The minister sounds like he was from the North Free Church...or the Free North Church...it is recorded as both!  It was once said that there were more churches than pubs in Inverness!!

That church is in Madras Street, which is in the same general area as Shoe Lane methinks!

Cissie.

Shoe Lane is now classed as a Path on OS map.

It is off Simpson's Lane, which is off Grant Street.  Post Code IV3 8HE.

Ref the Merkinch Hall...it has not got a number in the postal address.  It is shown as Merkinch Hall, Shoe Lane and sometimes as Merkinch Hall Simpsons Lane.

May I suggest that 5 Shoe Lane was a dwelling?  My GGF/GGM and family (my GF aged 2) lived at 7 Shoe Lane in the 1881 Census, later in   1891 in Church St, also Nelson St, Brown St and  in McLennan Crescent.  One family member died aged 9 months at 8 Shoe Lane in 1914.

It was also very common for people to be married in private houses as opposed to churches.

Hope this helps.

Edited to add : 1881 Scotland Census Dwelling 5 Shoe Lane occupied by Chisholm family.

Inverness / Re: Alexander Williamson
« on: Monday 06 December 10 21:57 GMT (UK)  »
Teamster.

Emily Buckley who married Alexander Williamson is my grandmother's sister.

From Canada,  I (and Tinkerbell) have got the Williamson line.  Tinkerbell is my cousin's wife.

It is the Buckley line pre 1891 where the brick wall is on my line.  Very elusive.  Emily's mother Sarah Buckley (ms Smith) was killed in Inverness in Sept 1920 and from her Death cert her parents were Worthington Smith and Elizabeth Smith.

Inverness / Re: Visiting Tomnahurich Cemetery?
« on: Saturday 15 August 09 08:25 BST (UK)  »
Yes.

That is where I get my information on relatives.

Originally from Inverness, I have a lot of family buried there.  The staff are very helpful, on personal visits and by post.

I could not get a plan/leaflet/map of Tomnahurich layout.  I spoke to a  stonemason who was working on a headstone and had a book of plans and he pointed me in the  right direction!
