Hi Ruth, from the people you have asked for info on I assume we are related! William David Brunton and Janet Campbell were my great great garndparents and I grew up in the Markinch area where my parents still farm so I know the area very well.

William Brunton d 31/7/1852 and his wife Jean Smart 1/3/1847, they are both in the 1841 census.

William Brunton d 15/4/1810 and Isobel Scot 26/5/1815

John Brunton POSSIBLY d 11/12/1758 at Forthar which is very close to the Star area but just inside Kettle parish so his death is recorded there.

Eupham Sim/Sime/Simb - no record at all as far as I can find of her death which is VERY annoying as going back 12 generations the two "facts" I still have to prove 100% are that the William B who m Isabel Scott was the son of John and Eupham and not another William whose birth is not recorded and that the John B who married Eupham had previously been married to Elspeth Beal. Finding a death for her in the Kettle/Cults/Kennoway/Markinch area (the area we're talking about is only a couple of square miles) would pretty much seal the tin lid on it for me!

The Bruntons and Campbells as well as several other families who lived in Star of Markinch in the second half of the 18th century were all very inter-related and Campbell descendants at one stage or another farmed an awful lot of the farms round about, including the one my parents have (quite by chance, it's my Mum who is a Brunton not my Dad!).

I have heaps of info if you would like it, also photos of William David/Janet and their children etc.

Best regards

Hello, does anyone have any info on John Blacklock Elliot, son of Robert Elliot of Powisholm Castleton and Esther Elliot, b 1829? There are some suggestions on the web that he died in 1848 but I can't find any sources to confirm that. Robert died in 1865 and his will does not include his son John so he may well have died young but just maybe he was still alive but had been "disowned" because his parents did not approve of his marriage. His brother Robert was certainly involved in the temperance movement so maybe the family were pretty straight laced?

Otherwise if he did die in 1848 does anyone have any info on other candidates to be the John E who married Mary Jane Scott at Gretna (an irregular marriage) in Dec 1858? She had an illegitimate son in Feb 1857 who may or may not have been John's and they had several other children after their marriage. John's death cert in 1915 gives only his father's name (Robert). John and Mary Jane had at least 8 children but no Robert though all the other expected names are there - maybe another indication of a family falling-out.

Thanks a lot of for any help anyone can give!

Hi dhday, my info has taken 5 or 6 years so far to put together and is by no means anything like complete/finished with many questions still to be answered but if you let me know your e-mail I will send you what I have on the descendants for Robert and Jean.

Thanks very much. The Selkirk ones aren't mine but Euphemia is and I didn't have her date of birth so that is one step in the right direction. I will look for a birth record for her now and that just might take me somewhere. Which one is the Old Cemetry in Gala, is it the Aisle or another one?

Best regards

Alan that would be brilliant, thanks so much. I am looking for any Duns - should be one N but might be 2. I know there was an Andrew there in 1612 but then I have a gap of about 6 generations until a George at Hollybush at the very end of C18. George died in Gala but as far as I can see was not buried at the Aisle. Andrew was definately connected with Lindean/Boleside church (as far as I know they are the same) as there is a reference in Hall's History of Galashiels to him getting in trouble with the kirk session for driving corn on a Sunday! He was at Brigheugh just a couple of hundred yards down the Selkirk road then.

If you want my personal e-mail it's (*).

Hello, can anyone tell me which cemetries in Gala have OLD stones, I'm looking for one death probably not long after 1841, another between 1829 and 1841 and then beyond that really into the 18th century. There is nothing at the Aisle. Are the any records at all for Boleside/Lindean?

Thanks so much for any help anyone can give.

PS George Dun lived in Sime Place at the time of his death but previously farmed at Whitebank and Hollybush. A John Dun farmed at Kilknowe at the end of the 18th century. Before that I think the family probabaly came from Lindean/Boleside just outside Gala.

Hi Kevin, are there any Duns (normally 1 'n' but might be 2). Specifically George Dun who died sometime shortly after 1841, he would be about 80, or anyone who might be his father or an earlier ancestor. Also his wife Euphemia Lees, she must have died between 1829 and 1841. Any Dun at all with 1 "n" who is there will be closely connected to my family. Thanks so much.

Thanks Cec. I have James (I think his birth record is "James or Robert" but it pretty much has to be him), Rebecca, Jean, Mary and Robert. I don't have Hugh, the 2 Marthas or William, could you possibly give me the dates for them? Do you have an online tree where I could get details of the descent from Hugh? If not, if it's not too much hassle could you possibly e-mail more info on descendants of Robert and Marion and in return I will happily send you my info? My e-mail is (*).

I did realise there was probably at least one other brother as the inventory of James (m Mgt Easdale) estate at his death refers to Robert Spier younger of Camphill being his eldest brother. In the inventory there is also refernence to rent being due to him at the time of his death by William S (maybe the youngest brother) and John S (don't know who he was).

Re where did they come from, was it Dalry to Glasgow or Glasgow to Dalry, I suspect they were in the Dalry areain the late 18th century. There is a record of farm horse tax for a James Spier of Camphill in 1797/98. Possibly the father of Robert m Marion Kirkwood and James the Glasgow merchant? The merchant may have been a linen merchant, in the early 19th century the weaving industry in Dalry took off and many local people were producing linen for merchants in Glasgow so maybe James went to Glasgow to tale advantage of that?

Although not directly relevant to you, their is a sad story online in an obit from the Wigtownshire Advertiser concerning Jean, daughter of James S & Janet Archibald who were my GGG Grandparents. She died in June 1845. She took ill of scarlet fever on the Saturday, banns for her marriage were called in the church on the Sunday, she died on the Monday and was buried on Friday 13th, the day she was due to be married.

Spier has been used in my family as a middle name since the children of my GG Grandparents Agnes Spier & Hugh Robertson who were both grandchildren of James & Margaret Easdale. My G Grandfather had no S at the end but we have always had the I before the E. My grandfather, father, brother and nephew are all James Spiers Robertson.

Lastly, do you have any info on the Rebecca S who m John Howie? I have her in as the daughter of James & Margaret Easdale but I don't think that can be right as the age at death is way out.

Best regards,

Susan
