Edward DOB 1843 Great Massingham, Norfolk
William DOB 1845 Great Massingham, Norfolk

Their parents were William Barnes and Ann Codling. He was born 1814 she was born 1818. I believe William was the illegitimate son of William Saddleton and Sarah Barnes as I can't find any marriage for them. He is named as Williams father which is unusual for an illegitimate birth. Maybe they intended to marry but didn't ???

I have traced the Barnes's back to William Barnes' father also called William who married Jane Duchess 7 October 1787 in Barton Turf, Norwich, I haven't found their DOB's or death dates. Sarah Barnes was their daughter she was born 1794 and married John Moore (More) 1824 in Swaffham, Norfolk. They had 4 children - Richard DOB 1825, Mary DOB 1827, Edward DOB 1830 and Sarah DOB 1833. I think Sarah died in Westminster, London 1849, but I have been unable to confirm this is the correct Sarah Barnes.

My research isn't anywhere near complete, but I hope this helps with your family tree.

Hi Eileen,
Its a while since I posted this. I believe Edward died in Sunderland in 1902. I don't have any information about his second wife or their siblings. I don't know what happened with his first marriage. I didn't know there was another daughter in that marriage and that her and Florence were subsequently adopted. I would pleased if you could fill in some of the missing info. Edward Barnes was my maternal great grandfathers brother.
Edwards generation either moved to Sunderland or London, except for William who stayed in Norfolk.
Thanks for your message.

Hi,

Can anyone help me with my research into my maternal great great great grandfather William Barnes, born 29 May 1814 in Massingham, Norfolk? I have his marriage to Ann Codling on 20th Nov 1841, the witnesses were George Codling and Elizabeth Barnes.

I have been unable to find William's parents. Do I need to search local record offices to get the information? If so can someone post the links.

Also does anyone know the historical reason why members of a family of farm labourers would migrate to Sunderland to work in heavy industry between 1871 and 1881? Did something happen to reduce the amount of farm work, possibly the introduction of machinery?

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

I've traced my paternal ancestors back to Scotland.

On the Scotlandspeople website my ancestors were:

Thomas Aitken b.1786
Janet Stewart Glen b.1786

Married 17 July 1818 in Govan
Ref 646/000 020 0325 Govan

How do I find out who the parents were? They are not given on copy of the marriage register on Scotlandspeople.

Also whats the best way to get as far back as possible in previous generations?

Thanks for your help.

I am trying to find the death record for Thomasina Louden she died in March 1971 in Billingham, but there are no matches on Free BMD. The local council boundaries have changed and I don't know where to search next.
Can anyone help?
