Other Countries / Re: Marriage which may have been in India
« on: Sunday 03 January 21 13:58 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I have just realised now that you have responded to my post and may i apologise for the very very late response, i have put together what i believe to be quite a large family tree within the ancestry page that i am registered on. Still no further forward with additional information on Audrey Sayers though. Have you managed to find any more information yourself on your aunt? Am i correct in thinking that you will be a distant relation of my grandmother? It gets very confusing branching out a family tree and determining how everyone is related!!

Ha - you thought your reply was late! My apologies to you Lauralil. I am still researching my aunt and uncle's marriage! I may never find the answer but I think my last resort may be the army as it seems my uncle was in the army during WWII. However, to answer your question I am not a blood relative of my aunt as she married my dad's brother.

Hi Ladyhawk and Lauralil,
I was just looking thought my e-mails and found the one referring to this subject. I'd just about given up hope of ever finding anything else out about my Aunt Donna then read this forum thread again. I'm afraid I still haven't found any information at all about my aunt and uncle's marriage, however, I do now have a copy of the ships passenger list where my uncle was returning to India around 1960 (ish) - I don't have the information in front of me for the exact date. If this helps Lauralil at all - and it's not much - I do remember my aunt talking about a nephew she often visited. My aunt and uncle were then living in Wimbledon, London so I'm guessing the nephew lived near to them. Could the nephew be the son of Maud Margaret Maximano and if that's the case did Maud Margaret move to England around the same time as my aunt Nestar Dona Maximano (Donna)?

Hi Ladyhawk, I was very young when I first got to know my aunt and it wasn't something I would have thought about asking. I wish I'd known her better, but they moved to London for a while, then my uncle died, I have one letter from Donna  to my mother and father when her husband died and she was absolutely devastated, my father died a few months after my uncle,  as far as I know, she didn't keep in touch with my side of the family .

I did try to work out from the site if Donna had any brothers or sisters but I think I'll try to find out when, where, if, the marriage ever took place. I'd be very surprised if my uncle was willing to brave the wrath of his father by not marrying.  ;)

Cathy, if there was an 'applause' smiley I would be using it right now. I did not think I would get any answers in such a short time, but, it looks like you've found in a few hours, the information I've been trying to find for months. The information you've posted appears to be my aunt and not only that, but, I now have extra information on Dona/ Donna's parents. Well done.  :)

Thank you very much - I've been searching under 'Donna' including variants but it didn't show anything for me. I was under the impression my aunt was born in Calcutta. I will take a look now and once again - thank you, I really do appreciate your help.

Hi cath151, I don't think my uncle had another initial but I don't have his birth certificate at the moment. According to my uncle's death certificate he had only one first name. His wife's name was Donna (with a possible middle name or surname of Esta but I'm not completely sure of this). Thank you very much for your help, it is very much appreciated.

Hi cath151, wow! Another fast response, thank you. Yes, my uncle's surname was Houghton. I'm a member of findmypast but I've had no luck with finding any information on this particular marriage. The stumbling block is definitely not knowing my aunt's (possible) real first name and last name. I believe they were married though - they wouldn't dare be anything else where his father was concerned as he was strict Roman Catholic. I've been looking through India's immigration/emigration records but still having no luck. Maybe if I write to the Indian embassy they may be able to help, otherwise I'll just concentrate on the rest of my relatives and come back to this later. I would like to solve the problem now though.

Hi aghadowey, no there were no children and I don't have a specific year for the marriage. The ships passenger list shows that my uncle travelled on the ship 'Chusan' on 1st October 1960, but I don't know if my aunt and uncle had already met and married. Plus, I was always led to believe my uncle had been a policeman in India, but I've discovered he was a security officer - so some misleading information and it hasn't helped with my research.

Thank you for such a quick response to my question.  :)

Hi everyone,
I'm new to this site so hope I'm posting this in the correct place. I am trying to find some marriage information. I was doing quite well with my research until I hit a stumbling block with the marriage of an uncle to a lady from India. It is possible that my aunt 'anglicised' her name to make it easier for us to pronounce, but, because I don't know what her real name or maiden name was I cannot find their marriage certificate. I have my uncle's death certificate and my aunt's name is on there but it does not show her maiden name. I know my uncle travelled to India as I found his name on a ships passenger list, and, from memory I know he lived there with his wife for a few years before they both came to live in England. Can anyone give me any advice on where to look next please?
