Technical Help / Re: Windows 7 upgrade
« on: Wednesday 11 November 09 13:20 GMT (UK)  »
I've just bought a new lappie with Windows 7 installed, I think it's great, not dissimilar from XP, after 6 days of constant use I have had no difficulties at all, for once I think MS have got it right.

I've helped quite a few people who have picked up nasties while using it. It appears to be very weak in detecting trojans. You can't beat a good complete security suite. Some people run down Norton, I've used it for years and the 2009 version is by far the best one ever, you can get it off ebay for about £15, your PC's security has got to be worth that a year.

The main problem with upgrading the version of FTM that you are using is that you can't go back.  This can create major problems if you try to send anything, in particular gedcoms, to anyone who hasn't upgraded.

David

A gedcom file will be the same, it does not matter what version you use to create or open it, a file saved as .FTW is as you say, not forwards compatable but it is backwards compatable

tried to do hoover but nothing happens. the family tree i am useing is 2003 abt.i am also using windows xp. haydon

When you have the file on your Desktop, right click on it, a menu opens, in that menu is "Send to" THEN hover the cursor over "Send to" and another menu will pop up, in that new menu you can see CD drive, click that, job done (once there's a CD in the drive that is)
