Devon / Re: Harold Fox died 21.05.1932

1901 shows him as Harold Fox aged 7yrs and born Laira and living with grandparents James & Sarah Rogers.  In household is Henrietta Rogers aged 35

Harold gave his date of birth as the 1st January 1893 on enlistment into the Royal Navy.  In the 1911 Census Harold is living with Henrietta at the home of Henreitta's brother Frank and her sister Alice who was born in 1884.  Frank calls him his Nephew in the Census, so it seems highly likely that Henrietta was his mother.
Its all very puzzling!

Hi

You say his mother never married but that he had nieces.  Presumably his mother had other illegitimate children apart from Harold.

If he was illegitimate - was he known by his fathers surname rather than Rogers?

You also refer to his "native Plymouth" so is that where he was actually born?

I am just wondering if there is any possibility he was buried as Rogers although his death was registered as Fox

Thanks for your reply.
His Mother was Rogers by birth and as far as I can establish Harold was her only child.  It would appear that she gave Harold the Father's name of FOX from birth, although this is an assumption on my part.  Harold was indeed born in Plymouth and the Rogers family appear to have been resident in the Laira area.  I have found nothing at all to indicate that he ever used or was known by the surname of Rogers.
Best regards

Devon / Harold Fox died 21.05.1932

I am trying to locate the grave location of a Leading Stoker Harold Fox who died in the Royal Naval Hospital at Haslar, Gosport on the 21st May 1932.  He was definitely not buried or cremated at Gosport so I am assuming he may have been returned to his native Plymouth for burial. Unfortunately at the time of his death his only relations appear to have been a couple of nieces and I wonder whether they would have requested this to happen.  With so many cemeteries in Plymouth I wonder if anybody can advise me of the best way to search please.  As a point of interest his mother never married and she was Henrietta Rogers.
Very many thanks

Kent / Brown family of Dover.
« on: Sunday 26 June 16 18:38 BST (UK)  »
Very much of a longshot but can anyone help please?
I am looking for information on a GEORGE WILLIAM BROWN who was born in Dover in 1887.  His Parents were William (1860-1922) and Jessie (1860-1945).
George served in the Royal Navy until 1921 and then appears to have returned to Dover.  In 1922 his Father died who was described as being a Pork Butcher and Greengrocer.  Georges's mother Jessie and her daughter, also named Jessie and her son John William Brown appear to have run a shop which probably sold the meat and vegetables.
After returning to Dover George appears to have lived with his widowed Mother at Swannee Bungalow, Minnis Lane in the River area of Dover and he died there on the 6th September 1941.  When his Mother died in 1945 the same address was given.
What I would very much like to discover is what occupation did George William Brown have between 1921 and 1941.  I am assuming he could well have gone into the family business.
As I said at the outset this is very much of a longshot but if anybody can assist I will be very grateful indeed.

Nottinghamshire / Re: Samuel Taylor Born Nottingham 1st Sept 1882

If you don't know his family or what happened after he left the Navy he obviously isn't a relative then.

I remember seeing that when he enlisted in the Navy July 1901 his height was only 5' 3"/4" and thinking that he had maybe inflated his age somewhat.

Have found a family on 1891 census born in and living in Radford:

William Taylor   52    Pig Jobber
Ann Taylor        50
Tom Taylor 23      Pig Jobber
Hester Taylor  16        ditto
Leaith (?) Taylor 14     ditto
Saml. Taylor 6

(Wondering if the strange Christian name could be Salathiel birth regd Dec.1876)

The Saml. Taylor bc.1885 could be the Sam Taylor birth reg'd Dec.1884 - unfortunately I cannot find any of this family before or after 1891.   Nor do any of their children appear to have been baptised.

Could Sam Taylor - birth reg'd Dec.1884 Nottingham - have had a birthdate of 1st September I wonder and added 2 years to his true age in order to join the Royal Navy??

Annette

Thank you Annette.
Looks like this one is going to cause me problems.
Obviously its going to be fingers crossed over a Birth Certificate but I have another chap who kept the proper day and month of his birth but added two years to the year of birth to enter the RN, so this is what Samuel may have done.
Many thanks
Peter

Hi Annette
He came out of the Nay in 1920 suffering from what is now referred to as Post Traumatic Stress.  What happened to him in later life is a compete mystery, which is why I am trying to piece together his early years in case they reveal any clues.  Sadly RN Records do not show any Next of Kin.

Hello Carol and Liz
Many thanks for your replies.
Unfortunately, Samuel who was the son of William and Sarah also appears in the 1911 Census living with his Parents.  The Samuel I am looking for also appears in the 1911 Census but as a crew member of HMS Wildfire based at Sheerness.
It is possible that he gave an incorrect date of birth when enlisting, I have certainly found this to be the case in some previous research that I have undertaken.
Best regards
Peter

Samuel Taylor enlisted into the Royal Navy in 1901 when he he gave his place of birth as Nottingham and his dob as 1st September 1882.  Cant find a birth on Ancestry or FreeBMD that matches, so am hopefully awaiting a Birth Cert.
Are there any Taylor researchers who maybe able to add any details regarding this Samuel Taylor please ?
Many thanks
