Occupation Interests / Re: cooper - is it a registered trade
« on: Saturday 04 June 11 00:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi california dreamin,

Thanks for those suggestions - I'll start with the British Origins records, and then maybe the Southwark Archives. There might be some record there of Charles APPS , my ggg- grandfather, as he was supposedly from the London area, although I haven't actually been able to dredge up much info on him!

I have a record of him as a cooper in the 1841 census, living in Bermondsey with his wife & daughter. However he doesn't appear in the next census & is described as deceased on his daughter Annie's marriage cert in 1854. So far I have been unsuccessful in finding his death reg. He was an adult convert (after 1841 I think) to Catholicism, as I found a mention of him (online) in a magazine with the glorious title“THE BRITISH PROTESTANT OR,  JOURNAL OF THE RELIGIOUS PRINCIPLES OF THE REFORMATION” , in a report from Bermondsey -

"Charles Apps, a poor misguided man, was led astray by the Sisters of Mercy about two years ago, and the books and the kind attentions which they paid to him and his family had so won upon them that the whole family became strict Roman Catholics."

As his daughter Annie married James Hyde (also a cooper) in the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Bermondsey I guess this is the same family. Apps is not a common name. As Holy Trinity Church was bombed during WW2 I think a lot of their records were lost, although a cousin did successfully get a copy of the parish record of Annie Apps & James Hydes' wedding, so I might contact the parish directly to see if there is a record of his death/burial.

I guess there were a huge number of companies that employed coopers at that time, especially in the Bermonsey/Rotherhithe area.  I know the Customs Office had their own coopers as well, and wondered if James maybe had some connection with that work, as 2 of James & Annies' daughters went on to marry 2 sons of my gg grandfather Robert John PERCIVAL who was a Customs Officer (originally a waterman) living in Elephant Lane Rotherhithe. It may be worth an enquiry to the Customs Office to see if they have old records archived somewhere.

James Hyde & his brother John would appear to have done their apprenticeships (presumably with their father, as he was also a cooper on James' marriage certificate) in Cork, as they appear in Bermondsey in the 1851 census as j/man coopers (born in Ireland), so I'm wondering if there may have archives in Cork that have apprenticeship records. I think it may have been a family trade, perhaps tied up with licensed premises as there is a record of a James Hyde in the Post Office Directory for 1845, as a "cooper & huxter" living at 51 Dominick St. I don't have proof yet that this is the same family - something else to hunt down!

does anyone know if there's a list or register of journeyman coopers who were working in London during the 1800's, & maybe information about where they worked ?

I have a gg grandfather (Charles Apps  c 1800 - c 1849) who was listed as a journeyman cooper in the 1841 census (Bermondsey). His daughter Annie married James Hyde, who was also a journeyman cooper living in Bermondsey (but originally from Cork, & according to the marriage certificate, the son of James Hyde, cooper, of Cork).

Before he married Annie Apps James Hyde jnr was living in Bermondsey (1851 census) with his older brother John, who is also listed as a journeyman cooper, so it was obviously a family business.

I have tried also to find records of coopers from Cork but have drawn a blank :-(
I'm in NZ, so have to do the majority of my hunting online - any bright ideas would be gratefully accepted !!!

thanks, Ramosa

Kent / Re: Stedman West Malling

Thanks very much for that info Nick, it was really interesting, I'll pass it on to the rest of the family. I guess the implication is that Nathaniel "appropriated" a more important sounding family history - not the first person to do so !!

Ellen Stedman's husband Frederick Dendy died in 1879 in Horsham, leaving Ellen with her two daughters. Ellen herself died in 1887, and the two girls Ellen & Florence were brought up by Frederick Dendy's sister in Horsham. Florence married George Day (whose family owned a drapery/grocery in Chobham, but originally came from Chart Sutton) Oct 9 1901, & they emigrated to NZ, where George was farming. They had 9 children, 8 of whom lived to adulthood - Florence Ellen (my grandmother), Edward Lesley, Phyllis Hinemoa, Hugh Dendy, Joan Maru (?), Doreen Tui, Keith Stedman & Margery Evelyn Day, and there is a large family of descendants in NZ.

Any more info you have about the Stedmans would be great

cheers, Robyn Morris

Hi,

My third great grandfather was William Stedman of West Malling, who was listed as a chemist in the 1841 census (in West Malling). I assume he was working in the family chemist shop at the time.

He was the youngest of 10 children (4 boys & 6 girls) of James Stedman & Elizabeth Martin of West Malling (b 16 Feb 1808).

William married Sarah Anne Whiting of Addington, Kent (b Jan 1819, dau of Thomas Whiting & Mary), on Aug 14 1838. William died in 1850 aged 42, leaving Sarah a widow with 4 young children - Ellen (7),Thomas (5), Jane (3) & Alfred (1). They had also had 3 sons who died young - William (b 1839, d 1847), James (b Oct 1840, d 1842) and George (b Sept 1842, d before 1851).

The oldest daughter, Ellen married Frederick Peter Dendy, a draper in Horsham, and they had 2 daughters Ellen Dorinda Dendy & Florence Mary Dendy (my grt grandmother).

Our family has always been told that there is a Welsh connection through the Stedman family, and I have seen one family tree which says that James Stedman was the son of a Nathaniel Stedman (from Montgomery, Montgomeryshire in Wales), and his wife Mary Parsons.

Does anyone know if this is accurate, at this stage my hunt has hit a wall...

thanks,

Orkney / Harray Family
« on: Sunday 10 July 05 05:53 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to collect info about the Harray family, from Harray parish. My great grandfather, William Flett Harray & his wife Jane Spence emigrated separately to NZ, where they were married. We have a reasonable amount of info about the family, I'm interested in what happened to William Flett Harray's siblings. We know there are Harrays in Canada & California, as well as our NZ family (about 60 to 70 descendants here), I'd love to know how the about the Nth American connection, and what happened to the remaining Orkney family :), thanks, Ramosa
