Armed Forces / Richard Ping....16th foot Beds Herts Regiment

Hello...please can someone help us with a family conundrum?
My wife's Grandfather was we assume in this regiment...round about 1882  then again after 1891. BUT this is all due to family supposition.
He has disappeared from the 1881 census, this may be due to the fact that he tried to join the Guards but after 8 days was "let go" due to B2?
We have hardly any information of where the Beds & Herts were during the above time frames.
Many Thanks.

Thanks ,we have traced the   Gough  family from Cranfield to Ketton  Rutland,in the 1800s,it is the father of Minnie  who is the mystery, but one of her names is the key OFFEN,it seems to be the father. We believe  in those days the father s namewas often included .any thoughts ??????ACKY ::)
