Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Re: Hickman Family - again
« on: Friday 08 May 15 17:39 BST (UK)  »
Hello Hannah
The only 'John Hickmans' I have are as follows;
John Edward Hickman born c. 1852 Darlaston Staffs
John E Hickman born c. 1880 Pretoria, South Africa.
John T Hickman born c. 1911 Dudley Staffs
John Owen Hickman born c. 1870 Sedgley Staffs
John Hickman born c. 1894 Birmingham.

Most of the Hickman family appear to have come from over the 'Black Country' way, ie: Staffordshire, so I am afraid I cannot help you, which I regret.

I have not done any research on this family for a very long time anyway, and rest assured, I have no problem with you coming to me 'out of the blue' :)

Bletchingdon does appear, to me anyway, to be quite a way from Birmingham, but I do hope you can sort your John Hickman out.
Have you tried searching members on Ancestry?

Best of luck anyway
Regards
Gill Reynolds

Hi Willow

I have had a reply from that person on Ancetry.co.uk

He can't really help, as he only knows that George was married to an Alice, and cannot find a
marriage certificate either. He did say he would keep a 'lookout' though. At least he replied:)

I am tempted to try for the marriage cert for Alice Rimmer, seeing as how I have the Ref. No.
I will think about it and let you know.

Hi Willow

I have just e.mailed the owner of the Hickman Tree which you told me about.
Actually I had already seen the 1881 and 1891 census returns, but did not think it was George Hickman due to the occupation, Inland Revenue Worker. (What was I thinking?? Maybe I thought he was not intelligent enough for that type of job:( seeing that the rest of the family were Blacksmiths and worked in iron. Ah well, I could well have been wrong.
Also, though, this person I have contacted, does not appear to have him on the 1871 or 1901
same as me. His other census returns match up with mine. I will wait and see what happens.
Once again, thanks for your input,
Best wishes

Hi
Pleased to hear you think I am right:) note: only 'think' I am right:)

I did see that Edwin put his place of birth on the 1891 as Leicestershire, but
on the 'front page' it is printed down as born Wolverhampton.
It appears that the enumerator assumed for some reason that Edwin was born in Leicester,
(don't they make it hard for us??:)

I have just found the marriage of Edward Thomas to Alice Maud Harper in 1905 in St.Olave
Marriage from Free BMD
Marriages Sep 1905   (>99%)
HARPER    Alice Maud        St. Olave    1d   392
Hickman    Edward Thomas         St. Olave    1d   392
and have also found her on the 1901 in a 'Home' called St.James's, in London.Occ: Launderess.
She was born in Gravesend Kent, and was single at the time.RG14; Piece: 1929.

But I still can't find Edward Thomas Hickman on the 1901 - :(

Brick Wall???
Any suggestions?

Hi Willow
Marriage from Free BMD Possibly
Marriages Sep 1877   (>99%)
Gough    Bridget        Wolverhampton    6b   748
HICKMAN    Edward         Wolverhampton    6b   748

The occupation of Edward from 1871 through 1881 and 1891 is Blacksmith, which was why I was sure I had the right one, but cannot find him on the 1881 with a wife named Bridget or on the 1891,
only with Beatrice. I wonder if there was in those days an alternative name for Beatrice/Bridget, or if in fact she had a middle name being Beatrice, and decided to use that name rather than Bridget.?? Or are there mis-spellings along the line??

The one I have followed with Beatrice, gives the names of his children, Edward Thos born c 1878
in Wolverhampton, Henry Jas born c. 1880 in Wolverhampton, John Born c. 1883 in Wolverhampton Mary Ann Born.c. 1885 in Wolverhampton anf Alice Ellen born c. 1891 in DEPTFORD London.

Because Edward died in 1899, (not sure about his wife) I found Alice Ellen in 1901 in an Orphanage,Class: RG13; Piece: 652; Folio: 186; Page: 15. and in 1911 she was in the Workhouse
: RG14; Piece: 17531. (which tells me she had lost her parents)
I then found Mary Ann in 1901 as a boarder in Wolverhampton RG13; Piece: 2683; Folio: 72; Page: 26. and in 1911 as a general domestic servant, in Balham S.W. RG14; Piece: 2301.
(again I feel that she had lost her parents)

John I found in 1901 as a prisoner in Wales (a reform home)RG13; Piece: 5213; Folio: 145; Page: 5. and in 1903 he married in Prestwich and was living in Beswick.RG14; Piece: 24284.
(Because he was in trouble, I feel again, that he had no parents)

Henry James (Jas) married in 1899 in Greenwich. In 1901 he was living in Dulwich London
Occ: Blacksmith (which appears to run through the family of Hickmans)Class: RG13; Piece: 501; Folio: 18; Page: 23. and on the 1911 still a Blacksmith living in Camberwell London,RG14; Piece: 2528.

I still have one more to check out.

The fact that they all seemed to be 'free spirits' due to being parentless, they all drifted, and did end up in London.

Hope this does not give you the screeming abdabs:) as I thought I was on to a pretty good 'roll'
until I could not find the marriage of Edward and Beatrice, and not being able to find them in 1881 and 1891.:(

Enjoy:)
Bet you tell me I am wrong.

Regards
Gillianr

Hi Willow

I also have a death for Edward Hickman in 1899 in Greenwich:
Death from Free BMD
Deaths Dec 1899   (>99%)
Hickman    Edward    47    Greenwich    1d   790

So that would tie in with the death you found for Bridget
which means you may well be right:)

Hi Willow

Well, I did not find out what I wanted from the Bham Reg Office, so I still don't know the name of
George Hickman's father on the marriage certificate:(
Ah well, I tried.

Gillianr

PS
I have a new look up required if it is possible.
Edward Hickman born.c. 1853 (this is brother to George).
Edward is on the 1861, RG 9; Piece: 1991; Folio: 124; Page: 22;
 1871RG10; Piece: 2936; Folio: 116; Page: 12
 1881.RG11; Piece: 2793; Folio: 93; Page: 21;and 1891  RG12; Piece: 507; Folio: 101; Page: 1;

On the 1881 and 1891 he is with a wife Beatrice, and this is what I need help with - please:
I cannot find the marriage between Edward and Beatrice but on the 1891 he has himself down as Edwin. I have search both of those names.

Thanking you in anticipation:)

Hello Willow

I think you may be right, that I am chasing the wrong George Hickman, because I found the marriage certificate for him being married to Sarah Ann Leather, in 1870, and George's father's
name does not look like 'Charles', which I need it to be. The writing is awful to say the least,
but I have been a bit cheeky and contacted the Geneology person at Bham Reg Office, and have asked if he can take a look at it, and say 'yes' or 'no' to the question: Is George's father's name
'Charles'?

I have a feeling it looks more like 'James', but I will have to wait and see, and if it, try again.:(
