Yes, I've attached Philip's obit.  It's also in the Petworth Emigration Project group on Facebook (https://scontent-a-dfw.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/t1/s403x403/947274_340613376042051_390358422_n.jpg ).

I agree that Lou and Lucy are the same person.  She appears as Lou  or Lou H. in the 1910, 1920 and 1930 census records, and her death records show her as Lucy Margaret Chantler (Carey) daughter of Philip Carey and Sarah Hodges.

I have a marriage date of 11 Sep 1911 for Lou/Lucy and Charles Chantler.

I have question that maybe someone in the Carey line can help with.  Philip Carey's 1906 obituary says that he is survived by 3 daughters: Mrs. W.J. Cook of St. Thomas, Mrs. L. Hillman of Winnipeg, and Mrs. H. Nutt of St. Marys.  Mrs. W.J. Cook would be Annie; Mrs. H. Nutt would be Lily Susan, so I guess that leaves Lucy, however I have not found any records of Lucy associated with anyone named Hillman.  Later I show her married to Charles F. Chantler, but it looks like that took place sometime between 1910 and 1920.  Lucy appears in California in the 1910 census as Lou H. Carey - maybe the H is for Hillman?  Seems like an odd coincidence that L. Hillman is also Philip's mother.

Any light you can shed would be most welcome!

Frances E. Johnson was Caleb's niece in that she was his sister's husband's daughter (by a previous marriage), so she was not a blood relation.  Their marriage record can be found on FamilySearch (source below).  After Fannie's 1917 death, Caleb married Theresa Ludlow.  Ruth Richardson is the daughter of Caleb and Fannie.  Ruth married Winter Cooper 27 Aug 1924 in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan.

"Michigan, Marriages, 1868-1925," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NQ7R-MJY : accessed 21 Jan 2014), Caleb Richardson and Fannie E. Johnson, 27 Jul 1886.

Thank you for helping with Annie Carey's information.  I hate it when people disappear!

Thank you for responding.  Yes, that's right: Gardner Edwin Johnson married Retta Bunting on 23 Apr 1890 in Huron County, Michigan.

I've seen Edwin G.'s marriage record, where he is recorded as Edwin George Johnston -- my best guess is transcription error.  Unfortunately, I cannot find a primary record, other than family papers, showing his middle name as Gardner.  He just appears as 'Edwin Johnson' on his death certificate, and 'Edwin G.' in his obituary and other records.

Edwin was married twice: The first marriage was to Evelyn Davis, on 13 Nov 1861 in Oakland County, Michigan.  The 2 children from this marriage were Gardner Edwin (married Retta Bunting), and Frances Evelyn (married Caleb Richardson 27 Jul 1887, Gore, Huron, MI).  Caleb was Elizabeth Richardson's brother.  Evelyn (Davis) Johnson died on 14 Mar 1878.

Edwin married (second) Elizabeth Richardson, daughter of George H. Richardson and Harriet Carey, on 13 Dec 1878, Gore, Huron, Michigan. They had 7 children, including my grandmother, Harriet Carey Johnson (she later changed her name to Hallie).

With regard to the family of Philip Carey and Sarah Hodges, I'm confused about Annie.  She appears in Philip's household in the 1871 Census, age 5, which would put her dob about 1866.  However, her marriage record and subsequent census records indicate that she was born in 1873.  The 1911 census says August 1873.  Two different children?  That pesky 1881 census that no one can find might help with that question!

I have so far been unsuccessful in finding a record of Mary Gold's birth or parents in the parish records available online.  I have also tried through the Petworth Project group, but no luck so far.

Hi Gotcha,

I am also researching the family of Philip Carey, and ran across your discussion.  It pretty much agrees with my information, but I did notice a couple of differences in the children of Philip and Mary (Golds) Carey:

My information shows that their daughter Jane married Samuel Henry Mitchell about 1853 in East Nissouri, Oxford, Ontario.  According to his death record, Samuel was born 6 Jun 1830 in Devon, England and died 30 Jan 1910 in St. Marys, Perth, Ontario.

It was Elizabeth Richardson (my great-grandmother), daughter of George H. Richardson and Harriet Carey, who married Edwin Gardner Johnson.  Edwin was born 11 Nov 1835 in Vernon, Oneida, NY and died 25 Oct 1925 in Port Hope, Huron, Michigan.  He was the son of Gardner S. and Fanny (Cook) Johnson.

I surely would like to know what became of Philip's first wife, Mary Golds.  I haven't found any record of her death, or a burial record.  She just disappeared after 1861.

I did not have any marriage record for Philip and Sarah (Hodges) Carey's son George William Carey.  Thank you!

Hallie
