jorose and ShaunJ

Thank you both very much for your help.  Following an exchange with the tree owner, I am convinced that my photographs are, indeed, of George Lea Drew.  The photos are now winging their way to George's Great Granddaughter!

Couldn't have done it without your help so, thanks again!

Thank you very much, ShaunJ.

At first, I did not think that George Lea Drew in the Ancestry picture was the G L Drew in my photograph.  In the Ancestry photo, the nose seemed to me to be quite large even allowing for ageing.  However, there was something about the hairline which caught my attention - it seemed to match my photograph, particularly on the sitter's left side.

I have just spent the best part of an hour going through British Newspaper Archive images (mentioned by jorose) which mention G L Drew in his various shooting competitions.  One, in particular, caught my mind as it had the name Dorothy Drew in brackets.  It seems from one of the  Ancestry trees I looked at that George Lea Drew had a daughter called Dorothy.  I've not read the article thoroughly yet, but it seems to me that Dorothy may have been his shooting partner that day.

So, it seems quite likely that my G L Drew was George Lea Drew.  I think there's certainly enough there for me to contact the tree owner.  Fingers crossed.

Sincere thanks to jorose and you for putting me on the right track.

Thank you very much for pointing me towards the BNA.  The G L Drew in the newspaper reports certainly sounds like the same person as in my photo.  You many well be right about a competition in the Llandudno area.  It's all too easy to assume that people just go there for a holiday.

Thank you also for the information for the information about George Lea Drew.  He could be the sitter in my photograph.  As is often the case, there is no date on the photograph but the design on the back would be right for the mid-late 1880s.  That would make George Lea Drew a candidate as the man in the photo appears to be in his 20s.

I think what I need to do now is to see if I can find out whether a George Lea Drew, born in Ireland, actually served in the Manchester Regiment.

Thanks very much for pointing me in the right direction.  Very much appreciated.

Have just found Ernest and Minnie (nee Browne), Eva (Poppy) Braby's, parents in an Ancestry tree.  Have emailed the tree owner for more details but he/she has apparently not logged in for over a year.  So, not sure whether the tree owner is actively researching.

Looks as though the tree owner's connection is through the Browne line so not sure whether this will yield any helpful information.

Have seen your related thread on the South African connection at http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=677326.msg5220775#msg5220775.  Thank you.  Have also PM'd you today.

Thanks very much.  Standard Bank of South Africa in Northumberland Avenue sounds right as I have found several references to it.  These give the address as 9 rather than 19 Northumberland Avenue, though.

I will PM you later this morning with the inscription on the photograph.

Another Roots Chatter is trying to reunite families with old photos he has found of their ancestors.  He is looking for a Wm Braby:

"Wm Braby whose photo was taken in Sydney, Australia, offers a slightly better chance given that he was apparently aged 2½ in 1892"'
...

I'm afraid that I have just had to make a very grovelling apology to Nova67 by PM.

I have just looked very closely at the inscription on the reverse of the photograph I am trying to reunite.  It seems that what I interpreted as a "W" is actually a badly written "Ev".  The squiggle I thought was an "m" (giving "Wm" for William) is an "a".  Thus we have Eva Braby and not Wm Braby.  The record I was looking for is:

759/1890 BRABY EVA  ERNEST  MINNIE A  SYDNEY

Now that we have positively ID'd the sitter in this photograph, can anybody prove their descent from her?  After the way I have inadvertently maligned poor little Eva, it would be a great shame if I cannot send her home.  Meanwhile, I'd better bring forward the next appointment with the Optician!

Hi Batfink

I see you didn't get any reply to your post (I'm a Newbie and came across it today).

If you are still looking for Coggeshall burials - and you may not be after all this time - they are now online on the Coggeshall Museum website at http://coggeshallmuseum.org.uk/familyresearchers1.htm.

The entries are in searchable PDF format so you should be able to find the SAWYERs without too much difficulty.
