Hi Elizabeth,
Thank you for that info.
Fingers crossed that the certificate gives us some more info.  I don't know if you can get electronic copies of death/marriage/birth certs in Aus. We have them here and they are cheaper than the certs and have more info.  They appear to be a photocopy of the original registration and the death ones here give parents names, number of children, marriage date, place of birth, etc. Old ones even say how long they had been in NZ.  It may be worth asking.
Either of his marriage certs should also give us his father's name., but if you can get the type of death cert we can, then it should give us his mother's name as well.  That way we really could be sure.
I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Blessings

Hi Nicky & Elizabeth,
Thanks for your replies.

I do not know if this is the same James Wallace.  What I do know is that my Ggg-grandfather William had a son James born in County Antrim, Ireland.  Family rumour has that he came to NZ along with his 2 older brothers, to fight the NZ Wars.  The common consensus  in the family, seems to be that they were all in the 65th Regiment. Records I have found does indeed show a James Wallace in the 65th Regiment, but whether he was the son of William, I haven't been able to establish.  He did travel via Tasmania & Sydney, so it could stand to reason that he may have headed that way when he left the army.
I have no idea when  or who he married, so it has been a nightmare trying to trace him.
Your James could well be the same man.
Do you know when he married Maria Brophy or what Regiment he was in? Have you found either of his marriage certs?
All I know about him is what is posted in my post above, so we need to find something that may tie them together.
The only other thing that may help, is if any of the descendants had McKain (McKane) as a 2nd/3rd name. It seems to be fairly common in our Wallaces.

Fingers crossed.
Regards,
Lyn

Thanks KHP.  That is what I feared.....I had hoped to be able to get copies as they could be quite lengthy (in one case anyway).
They are very old records so that may not be possible.
I have read about ordering and gather that I may have to get permision to view or make an appointment, so asking someone else could be awkward.
I think that I will have to make a toll call and chat to someone first, before I ask for someone to do a look up for me.
Maybe using their staff is a possibility.....probably out of my budget though!! LOL!!

I will check it out.

Thanks again.

I have found several records relating to my ancestors, but with each of them, under the Location of Records is written, (Record must be ordered & viewed in this office).   Does this mean that I have to go to Wellington to view them or is it worth writing to order them?
A trip to Wellington is not an option for me.

Thanks.
