Hi Nicky & Elizabeth,
Thanks for your replies.
I do not know if this is the same James Wallace. What I do know is that my Ggg-grandfather William had a son James born in County Antrim, Ireland. Family rumour has that he came to NZ along with his 2 older brothers, to fight the NZ Wars. The common consensus in the family, seems to be that they were all in the 65th Regiment. Records I have found does indeed show a James Wallace in the 65th Regiment, but whether he was the son of William, I haven't been able to establish. He did travel via Tasmania & Sydney, so it could stand to reason that he may have headed that way when he left the army.
I have no idea when or who he married, so it has been a nightmare trying to trace him.
Your James could well be the same man.
Do you know when he married Maria Brophy or what Regiment he was in? Have you found either of his marriage certs?
All I know about him is what is posted in my post above, so we need to find something that may tie them together.
The only other thing that may help, is if any of the descendants had McKain (McKane) as a 2nd/3rd name. It seems to be fairly common in our Wallaces.
Fingers crossed.
Regards,
Lyn
